The purpose of this position inherently involves providing excellent medical care to our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant represents the mission and values to all clients. Our Veterinary Assistants set the tone for the technical and customer support in the hospital, and are responsible, like all team members, for fostering cohesion and motivation within the practice. Essential Job Functions include greeting clients and patients, escorting them into exam rooms, obtaining weight and vital signs, recording electronic medical records, assisting doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision, performing patient restraint, obtaining and processing laboratory samples, handling and dispensing medications, scheduling appointments, providing client education, relaying test results, maintaining client/patient records, preparing patients for surgical and dental procedures, assisting in anesthetizing patients, monitoring patients under anesthesia and during recovery, performing in-hospital treatments including injectable and oral medications and intravenous fluid therapy, keeping patients clean and cared for, assisting in training new staff, and maintaining a clean hospital environment. Other duties include backup phone and front desk support as needed. The position requires direct supervision from veterinarians and veterinary technicians and overall direction from the HOM/HLOD. The role is critical to ensuring a cohesive, well-trained, and motivated technical team, contributing to employee retention, patient well-being, and customer satisfaction. Preferred qualifications include at least 1 year of previous veterinary practice or related animal care experience, excellent communication skills, compassion, professionalism, telephone and computer skills, and a team player attitude. The work environment involves bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing for long periods, and direct contact with clients and pets.
