Job Title: Swim Instructor                                        Pay Grade: 2 

FLSA Status: Part-time-non-exempt                      Pay Range: $12.82-$16.02-$19.23 

Reports to: Aquatics Director                                 Revision Date: 3.25.2026 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Build members and the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact.?  

This position instructs group swim lessons in a safe, enjoyable,?positive and culturally aware environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests. While exemplifying the Y’s commitment to the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility and responds to all members and community inquiries in a timely manner. 
  2. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals. 
  3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer program participants and families to other programs. 
  4. Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports). 
  5. Knows and upholds all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report).  
  6. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. 
  7. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. 
  8. Trains and supervises class aids as assigned.  
  9. Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.  
  10. Fulfills any functions?appointed?by the YMCA administration 



Requirements

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. The minimum age of 16.  
  2. Certifications: CPR for?Professional?Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.?? 
  3. Currently?YMCA certified Swim Instructor, YMCA Water Safety instructor.? The?YMCA will?assist?with the above training to be achieved within the first year of?employment.? 
  4. Ability to?maintain?certification levels?of physical and mental readiness.? 
  5. 1+ years of experience teaching youth is preferred.
