The Role of the Tennis Head Professional is accountable for and directly engaged with developing, implementing, coordinating, and managing Tennis/Pickleball instruction, activities, programs and events to expand the customer base and enhance customer satisfaction. This position assists the Director of Tennis with the review and analyses of the operational and sales performance of the Tennis Center and recommends courses of action to increase revenues and profits. The position also assists in the marketing and promotion of the facility to local resort hotels and corporate groups. The Head Professional will also be responsible for the development of our annual pass program and be the person in charge of handling member questions, issues, and direct communication with them. (in accordance with brand and communication standards)
Nature and Scope of Position:
This is a Full-Time position that reports to the Director of Tennis. Although hours may vary, the position involves a minimum of a 40-hour work week.
The Head Tennis Professional coordinates and manages Tennis instructional programs which will attract customers and expand the customer base. Also develops, implements and promotes creative Tennis activities, programs and events to increase player counts and enhance customer satisfaction. Together with the Director of Tennis, incumbent formulates and implements short-term and long-term strategies to achieve established sales goals. Considerable judgment and foresight must be used in balancing time spent between tennis programs and event planning to ensure achievement of goals.
Incumbent must work closely with all the Tennis Team Members to ensure that the operation, which is open 365 days a year from early morning to early evening, is properly staffed, maintained, and presentable to our guests and membership. Incumbent also ensures that personnel are properly trained to provide the premium customer service expected from a world-class tennis operation. Incumbent is expected to learn all aspects of Tennis operations, and will fill in as needed.
Cost efficiency continues to be essential to the survival of the tennis operation. Incumbent must continually review and analyze the lesson and program operations to recommend courses of action which improve cost efficiency, enhance productivity and expand the revenue base.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develops, implements, coordinates and manages Tennis instructional programs which result in expanding the customer base. Creates and promotes tennis activities, programs, tournaments, and events to increase player counts and enhance customer satisfaction. Programs should include, but are not limited to, junior classes, adult programs, tournaments, corporate buy-outs, summer programs, round robins, etc.
- Ensures that the teaching programs generate the highest profitability possible. Analyzes and oversees existing programs to determine if changes can be implemented to increase the net profit for the club. Stays up to date with market research to ensure pricing matches that of the highest level of industry standard.
- Manages court reservation schedule in pro shop. Ensures all programs, clinics, lessons etc. are filled out. Handles any potential conflicts regarding this.
- Supervises hires, trains, motivates, and counsels team members, other teaching professionals and independent contractors (and their programs) to ensure that customers are provided premium customer service and courtesy. Ensures that on-staff pros are utilized over independent contractors as much as possible.
- Works closely with resort concierges to ensure resort visitors are aware of programs and events offered by the club. Also develops events for resort employees to promote the club.
- Manages tennis lesson programs to satisfy the needs of customers and develop customer loyalty. Develop rotation schedule to ensure equal distribution of walk-up resort lessons and clinics. Manages teaching schedules to accommodate seasonal customer volume.
- Manages annual pass programs and serves as point of contact for all communication and activities.
- Formulates and develops long term strategies and courses of action which will maximize revenues for the Tennis lessons, programs, activities, and events.
- Assists in daily tennis operations duties when necessary.
- Develops, maintains, and enhances annual pass holder, hotel, property owner, guest, and community relations to enhance the desirability and image of the tennis complex.
- Reviews and analyses operational and financial performance and recommends course of action to achieve revenue and profit goals.
- Directs, monitors, and administers the implementation of all standard safety regulations and safety programs to minimize industrial accidents and equipment damages.
- Communicates regularly with the Director of Tennis and other teaching professionals. Fosters an open and team environment to receive and disseminate direction, ideas and changes to all staff members and appropriate business partners.
- Ensures that facilities and courts are maintained, including nets, windscreens and furnishings, ball machine, grounds etc.
- Assists Director of Retail and Director of Tennis in maintaining a consistent and accurate merchandise count through spot checks, monthly inventory, and other operational processes.
Other Duties/Responsibilities:
- Serves as Manager on Duty in the absence of the Director of Tennis.
- Performs all shop related team member duties when necessary such as, but not limited to, the scheduling of court times and lessons, restocking merchandise, answering phones, stringing racquets, using the cash register, advising, consulting and selling hard goods and soft goods purchases, etc.
- Advises and consults with the Director of Tennis on all pertinent tennis center related and staff related matters.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills:
- USPTA or USPTR Certified Tennis Professional (Minimum Pro 1 rating), which shall have included experience in the development and instruction of tennis programs for juniors and adults.
- IPTPA Certified Pickleball instructor (minimum level 1 rating), which shall have included experience in development and instruction of pickleball programs for juniors and adults.
- Minimum playing ability of a 5.0 or better, based on the NRTP rating system.
- Experience in running events and directing tournaments with large numbers of participants.
- Experience in retail merchandising management. Use of electronic point of sales systems and Microsoft Office.
- Previous supervisory and management experience in commercial tennis operations.
- Experience in promoting and developing tennis activity through instructional programs, lessons, and merchandise sales.
- Previous customer service and retail merchandising experience.

Frequently requires teaching (giving instructions or lessons), stooping, bending, twisting, standing, walking, running, reaching, handling, eye-hand-foot coordination, balancing, and use of teaching cart, ball hoppers and tennis racquets, supervising others, exposure to sunlight, extreme heat or humid environmental working conditions.
Occasionally requires sitting, kneeling/crouching, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 21-50 lbs., visiting other work sites, reading and writing, mathematical ability, use of golf cart, use of and talking on telephone, receiving instructions, use of electronic cash register, calculator, computer, exposure to dust, dirt, wind, noxious odors, fumes, and wet environmental working conditions.
Visual capabilities required: good to excellent vision, wide field of vision, depth perception, color vision.
Job involves approximately 5 hours outdoors and 3 hours indoors.
