 Position Purpose:

The Cardiopulmonary Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients with cardiac and pulmonary conditions in a rehabilitation setting. This role focuses on patient assessment, monitoring, education, and support throughout the rehabilitation process, ensuring high-quality care and optimal patient outcomes.

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assess, monitor, and evaluate patients participating in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and telemetry during exercise sessions, responding promptly to any adverse events.
  • Communicate patient progress, concerns, and changes in condition to physicians and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Document patient assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries accurately and timely.
  • Educate patients and their families about cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, treatment plans, lifestyle modifications, and self-management strategies.
  • Coordinate care and refer patients to other healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment for patient care and exercise sessions.
  • Delegate appropriate tasks to support staff to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Maintain required certifications and participate in ongoing professional development related to cardiac and pulmonary care.

 

Qualifications  

Education: Associate Degree in Nursing or graduate of a Nursing Diploma program.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Current, valid Arizona RN license or compact state RN license.
  • Current BLS & ACLS certification through the American Heart Association

Experience: 

  • 2 years RN experience
  • 1 year experience working with cardiac, emergency room, or intensive care patients

Skills: 

  • Demonstrates proper use of exercise equipment and techniques. 
  • Accurately monitors patients’ blood pressure during rest and exercise. 
  • Communicates instructions clearly to individuals and groups. 
  • Fosters a positive, motivating environment for patient therapy.

 

Preferences 

  • Telemetry unit or coronary care unit experience
  • 2+ years’ experience in a cardiac Cath lab or cardiac rehabilitation program
  • Critical Care Certified Nurse, 
  • ACSM Exercise Specialist Certification 

 

Special Position Requirements 

  • May work in environments with moderate to high background noise. 
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases; follows standard infection control precautions. 
  • Uses proper safety measures when preparing patients, placing electrodes, and handling items exposed to bodily fluids.

 

Work Requirements  

  • Spends 70–80% of time standing, bending, or reaching while assisting patients. 
  • Spends 20–30% of time seated for charting and documentation. 

    Assists patients with transfers between equipment as needed.
