Peer Specialist


Mark Twain Behavioral Health (MTBH) is a private not-for-profit Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic serving Northeast Missouri since 1975 with a wide variety of outpatient services.  We strive to treat the whole person by promoting wellness as individuals work toward their personal goals of achieving a satisfying, productive and healthy lifestyle.

Role Responsibilities


  • Assist individuals in recovery through supporting, encouraging and modeling recovery and resilience from mental illness 
  • Promote skills for coping with and managing psychiatric symptoms and encourage use of natural supports 
  • Assist the individual in achieving goals and objectives set forth by the individual in their treatment and recovery plan
  • Advocate for the client and assist the client in the process of recovery and the power of resilience and provide hope that recovery is possible
  • Emphasize the opportunity for individuals to support each other as they move forward in their recovery
  • Offer interventions which may include:   sharing lived experiences; helping individuals recognize capacity for resilience and connect with peers and community; assist to identify strengths and personal resources to aid in their recovery; help  to set and achieve recovery goals
  • Provide support that may include:  starting and sustaining mutual support groups; teaching and modeling symptom management and problem-solving skills; support efforts to find and maintain paid employment; setting and following through on wellness plan and health activities; promote community dialogues on recovery and resilience to reduce stigma
  • Complete Peer Specialist training as required and approved by Supervisor
  • Adhere to Missouri Peer Specialist Code of Ethics
  • Adhere to all client rights, including confidentiality
  • Adherence to the MTBH Ethical Code of Conduct and all policies is required


Qualifications


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Life story of recovery from a mental health condition and/or substance use disorder
  • Applicable training and testing as required by Department of Mental Health
  • Certification as a Missouri Peer Specialist is required
