United Support Services, Inc., founded in 2003, is an innovative engineering and technology business headquartered in San Diego, CA. We have an exciting new opportunity and are currently looking to add to our berthing barge and messing maintenance team. This position is for a Pipefitter for our facility on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine area. onboard U.S. Navy vessels and all facilities tasks related to work areas. USS offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits!

Job Description:


In this position, the Pipefitter will read and interpret blueprints and sketches to repair, modify, install and dismantle various pipes and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic and water systems. Perform fabrication, assembly and testing of piping systems and components. Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping or bending and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery. Strict adherence to safety, quality standards, good housekeeping habits, high level of critical thinking/reading. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain government base access.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Installing or repairing water, steam, gas or other types of pipe and pipefittings
  • Laying out work and measuring to locate position of pipe from drawings or other written specifications.
  • Cutting various sizes of pipe to correct lengths with chisel and hammer, oxyacetylene torch or pipe-cutting machines.
  • Threading pipe with stocks and dies, bending pipe by hand-driven or power-driven machines.
  • Assembling pipe with couplings, brazing, and fastening pipe to hangers.
  • Making standard shop computations relating to pressures, flow and size of pipe required.
  • Making standard tests to determine whether finished pipes meet specifications.
  • Use of industry specific hand tools, portable power tools and manually operated machine tools.
  • Shaping, bending, fabricating, fitting and assembling techniques.
  • Driving may be required.
  • Employees are expected to provide their own customary trade hand-tools necessary to perform their job duties, subject to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Employees are expected to perform other duties as assigned, including tasks outside of their primary trade, when required to support operational needs. Such assignments may be temporary or may continue for an extended period of time.

 

Experience:

  • Completion of apprenticeship preferred
  • Good communication skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • Familiarity with a shipyard environment.
  • 3 years pipefitting experience required; 5 years preferred



Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have Security Clearance.
  • Must have valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass a government background check and obtain base access credentials.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes, no less than 50lbs.
  • Must be able to work on and climb ladders.
  • Be able to work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as assigned which may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions as well as working aloft or over the sides of vessels.

 

ADA Notations:

Ability to traverse narrow passageways, ladders/stairs, and confined spaces.

Requires walking, reaching, sitting and concentration in the presence of occasional noise.

Able to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs. in weight.
