Position Scope:

BMG has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer located in Knoxville, TN.  The Mechanical Design Engineer will be expected to design, detail, test and support automated machinery, robotic systems, and integrated systems for production primarily in the packaging industry. The engineer will be responsible for providing mechanical design input and collaborating on concept and development efforts for the business.  The role requires a team working style and the ability to operate with many other functional roles including management, plant operators, supervisors, and other engineers; the engineer must be self-motivated; able to work with minimum supervision; possesses a skill set that will enable and drive continuous improvement.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Creates computer-aided design (CAD) models and detailed design packages suitable for manufacturing.
  2. Read and interpret work orders and system specifications.
  3. Perform applicable calculations, research, materials and hardware selections to ensure a functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing machine design.
  4. Working independently or as part of a design team to design mechanisms, stand-alone machines, or fully integrated systems. Coordinate with Electrical Engineers, Controls Engineers, and Programmers.
  5. Create robotic End of Arm Tooling and integrated system work cells. 
  6. Create Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly documents, system layouts, and pneumatic circuit schematics.
  7. Review the work of drafting or engineering records related to specific projects to improve product value.
  8. Provide technical support for in-house machine assembly team when needed.
  9. Communicate regular and timely updates on projects in a clear and concise manner.
  10. Meet targets and milestones set by management, e.g., budget and schedule.
  11. Be adaptable to receive and respond appropriately to direction and feedback.
  12. Identifies and resolves model, design, and interface problems together with team.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 3 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in design of automated packaging and product handling equipment.
  2. Functional knowledge of static and dynamic forces, material properties, machining tolerances, and drafting.
  3. Knowledge of 3D CAD software, SolidWorks modeling package and PDM (Product Data Management software).
  4. Competent in Excel, Word, and Outlook. 
  5. A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, tolerances, codes, and standards.
  2. Knowledge of welding and/or weld callouts.
  3. Experience with industrial robots and robot cell design.
  4. Experience with AutoCAD or similar 2D design software.
  5. Experience with pneumatic actuators, solenoid valves, flow controls, and pressure regulators.
  6. Experience with servo actuators, gear boxes, and power transmission design.
  7. Knowledge of basic gear train design, gearbox, bearing, and bushing selection, chain drives, timing belt drives, and linear and rotary motion design using pneumatic or servo actuation. 
  8. Interest and ability to learn new software and processes to continually improve efficiency of the design cycle.
  9. Innovative mindset capable of providing customized solutions for customers. 
  10. Willingness to work hands-on with automation equipment, including using hand tools.
  11. Strong analytical problem-solving skills, basic machine troubleshooting experience.
  12. Excellent communication, professional, and interpersonal skills.
  13. Experience with performance testing and evaluation of machine designs.
  14. Experience and interest in developing new concepts, clean-sheet designs, and formation of new solutions.

ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs. at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
