Mayo Clinic Health System Wisconsin is hiring a physician to become a collaborative member of the Department of Palliative Medicine, based at our La Crosse location. The primary responsibility is our hospital palliative care consultation service, as well as possibly a portion of ambulatory clinic.  The physician hired will be the second Palliative Medicine physician in La Crosse, while there are also four in Eau Claire.  Teaching responsibilities are inherent to the role, and academic appointment with the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science is expected. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialty palliative medicine expertise and leadership on our hospital interdisciplinary palliative care consultation team. 
    • Collaborate with the primary service, other consultants, and the interdisciplinary team to contribute to the patient’s plan of care.
    • Guide patients and families to construct appropriate goals of care.
    • Provide expert physical and non-physical symptom assessment and management.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary ambulatory Palliative Care clinic.
  • Serve as supervising physician for Palliative Care Service nurse practitioner(s) and/or physician assistant(s). 
  • Collaborate with other departmental physicians in shared palliative care call coverage if it were to commence.  (There is currently no night or weekend call.)
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Provide Palliative Care education for staff, colleagues, students, and community, as indicated and appropriate.
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
  • Remain open to performing other duties as requested.
  • Appropriately document patient care services to support professional billing.

  • Commitment to covenantal physician-patient relationship and whole-person care.
  • Commitment to not participate in physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia.
