Position Overview

The Principal Counsel, Employment provides broad legal support to the Company as a member of our global employment and benefits legal team. This role is expected to (i) provide day-to-day legal guidance on U.S. employment law topics such as leaves of absence, discrimination, restrictive covenants, fair employment investigations, wage and hour, and reductions in force, (ii) provide U.S. legal support on global initiatives, policies, and procedures, and (iii) manage employment litigation. This position will report to the Associate General Counsel, Employment.

This position is on-site in Madison, WI or San Diego, CA.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide stakeholders with an understanding of legal obligations and risks to allow stakeholders to make informed decisions.
  • Engage, direct, and supervise outside counsel in response to administrative charges, attorney demand letters, and general employment law questions.
  • Monitor employment law requirements and new developments actively, including identifying areas for legal focus.
  • Draft and/or review employment policies, agreements, and communications.
  • Respond to subpoena and personnel file requests.
  • Perform other corporate duties as assigned.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Exercises wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
  • Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
  • 6+ years of experience practicing employment law in private practice or in a corporate legal department (preferably both).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience practicing employment law in private practice or in a corporate legal department (preferably both).
  • Experience or background in healthcare and/or life-sciences.

Salary Range:

$174,000.00 - $277,000.00

 

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to be considered for company stock at hire and on an annual basis.
