The English Department at Saint Martin’s University (Lacey, WA) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2026. We are seeking a specialist in early British literature, either Medieval or Renaissance, whose responsibilities would include teaching two foundational courses in the major: the first half of our British historical survey and an upper-division seminar on Literature in the Medieval World.

Like all English faculty at Saint Martin’s University, the candidate would teach first-year composition, as well as Humanities and interdisciplinary seminars in our Core Curriculum. We welcome applicants with a secondary specialization in the Classics or in an area of writing pedagogy, such as Developmental Writing, Technical Writing, or Writing across the Curriculum.

The position carries a teaching load of 24 semester credit hours per year, with a reduced load in the first and fourth years. Typically, English faculty teach an assortment of 4-credit composition or writing-intensive courses, with a full load therefore being three courses per semester.

In addition to teaching, SMU faculty are expected to provide academic advising and mentorship to students, participate in departmental and university-wide service, and maintain an active scholarly agenda through conferences and publications.

  • Experience employing a variety of equitable teaching practices across the curriculum.
  • Ability to teach a range of undergraduate English and Core courses.
  • Willingness to support the Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts mission of the university.
