Assistant Professor of Theater in Acting and Directing

Full-Time Regular Faculty

Salary: $59,222; 9-month contract paid over 12 months, benefits eligible

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Saint Martin’s University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Theater specializing in Acting and Directing.  In addition to two or three annual campus productions, the person in the position will teach classes in Acting, Directing, Stagecraft, Theater History and Literature.  In addition to teaching in the major, the candidate will teach non-majors in the university’s CORE curriculum program. CORE classes include Introduction to Theater and Acting I.   The person in this position will also assist with marketing, recruitment, and enrollment of students. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach acting and related performance courses, including:
    1. Acting for Non-Majors / Introduction to Acting
    2. Introduction to Theatre
    3. Business of Acting / Professional Preparation
  • Direct departmental productions as part of the annual season
  • Mentor students in performance and professional development

We seek a dynamic teacher-performer-scholar with a passion for our small Catholic liberal arts setting, an energy for program building, and versatile scholarship.  We seek someone who will exhibit passion for sharing theatrical expertise with students as the theater department looks to the future.   

The position has a full-time teaching load of 24 semester credit hours per academic year, to begin fall (August) 2026.  

Requirements:

  • M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Theater with a specialization in acting or similar discipline
  • Significant directing and stagecraft experience
  • Passion for teaching and mentoring undergraduates in a liberal arts setting.
  • Ability to teach a range of undergraduate Theater and Core courses.
  • Willingness to support the Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts mission of the university.
  • Valid documentation permitting work in the US from the start date of the appointment.

Preferred experience:

  • Professional and/or academic directing experience in the following areas:
    1. Acting
    2. Directing
    3. Acting Pedagogy
    4. Stagecraft
