EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalency required. Some vehicle computer diagnostics knowledge is required. Specialized training in maintenance and repair of vehicle and equipment preferred. Previous experience of at least one (1) year in current mechanical work required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

OBJECTIVES

To repair and maintain all SLEMCO's vehicles and fleet equipment in order to keep the fleet in safe and efficient operating condition.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform the repairs, maintenance, and mechanical work on all vehicles and power equipment, to ensure safe operations and extended service.
  • Diagnose Diesel and Gas vehicle and all equipment issues.
  • Helps maintain inventory of standard parts and supplies.
  • Ability to perform engine overhauls, tune-ups, brake repairs, transmission repairs, electrical repairs, drivetrain repairs, hydraulic repairs, and all forms of vehicle maintenance.
  • Must be able to attend automotive seminars applicable to SLEMCO's policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate all SLEMCO's vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain shop area in a neat and orderly fashion to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Fill out all necessary paperwork, written or computerized.
  • Follow SLEMCO's, OSHA, State, and other regulatory rules and procedures as they pertain to, but not limited to, safety in the workplace.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of SLEMCO's service area.
  • Ability to work alone or harmoniously in a team environment.
  • Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • A thorough knowledge of engine systems, drivetrains, and electrical and hydraulic systems is required.
  • Ability to properly diagnose and repair component malfunctions.
  • Should hold or be able to obtain Louisiana State Class A Driver's License.

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Hours are from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm (4:30 pm for on call personnel) with one (1) hour for lunch.

The employee is required to work on a callout basis, which will include odd and unusual hours and will include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays or evenings.

Required to be available for emergency and/or pre-arranged work whenever called upon in all possible weather conditions. Normal work could take place in a garage environment or outdoors, which could be poor weather and low visibility conditions.

Requires repetitive motions with hand and fingers. Minimal exposure to fumes, odors, dust and dirt. Must be able to read, write and do arithmetic. Wears proper work and safety attire, such as, but not limited to hardhat, safety glasses, and work gloves, as needed. Job requires standing, climbing, bending, pulling, reaching and driving. Must be able to present information to others and work under stress. Frequently reaches overhead to work on equipment. The ability to frequently lift upwards of 50 pounds and is required to push and pull up to 150 pounds. May experience extreme noise, vehicular traffic, and slippery floors. Frequently walks, climbs, balances, bends, twists, pushes, pulls, kneels, crawls, and works in awkward positions to service equipment. This includes the possibility of working at heights up to 80 feet. These activities require finger dexterity, good vision for close work, good hearing, and ability to speak. Occasionally works with materials and chemicals, which must be handled according to manufacturer's specification. Activities require frequent interaction with others via written and verbal communications.
