540-Irrigation/Drainage - 5446-540 Irrigation Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, installs, maintains and repairs sprinkler and drainage systems in the landscape and slope areas; performs related work as required.

As a Technician, work is performed throughout the community, often independently of others. Resident contact with discussion and routine problem resolution is typical to this class. More difficult, non-routine problems are referred to the Irrigation Foreman.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Sets irrigation clocks for watering schedules as directed and as required to accommodate various activities, such as mowing and pesticide applications. Adjusts sprinklers and watering schedules following water management practices that will most efficiently meet the individual requirements of a variety of plant species in various micro climates.

Inspects sprinkler and drainage systems throughout the community as assigned, diagnoses malfunctions in the system and related control mechanisms.

Performs the appropriate repairs to valves, heads, pipes, clocks and related parts of sprinkler and drainage systems and performs soldering repair as required.

Assists in construction or revision of sprinkler and drainage systems, maintains assigned equipment, also repairs back flow prevention devices.

Drives a truck and maintains a truck inventory of materials.

Regular attendance required. All duties performed on-site for the Community.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Follows up on assigned written resident complaint requests, corrects problems, discusses with resident or refers to a supervisor-noting disposition. Drives utility vehicle inside assigned area and may be required to drive truck and trailer for transporting equipment.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Small tractor, truck and trailer, crew carrier, utility vehicles, soldering iron, small and large trenchers, ax, pulasky, shovels, sod cutter, hand tools, jack hammer and concrete saw.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to dust, dirt, equipment and solvent fumes, and may be required to work in extreme inclement weather.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational development which produces the ability to read and apply common sense understanding to the carrying out of oral or written instructions. Considerable experience in the maintenance and repair of complex remote-controlled irrigation systems or equivalent combination of education and experience that produces the following:

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of the water requirements of a variety of commonly used ornamental plants in differing soil types.
  • Knowledge of the principles, operating characteristics and maintenance of large complex electrically controlled sprinkler systems.
  • Knowledge of field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the electrical and plumbing trades.
  • Ability to locate, correct and adjust defects in specialized equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and stamina appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Ability to read and write work-related job instructions in English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in English.
  • Ability to pass exam required for back flow prevention devices.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment appropriate to the nature of assignment.
  • Skill in driving trucks and passenger vehicle.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

 

Possession of a valid CLCA Irrigation Certification.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, walk for periods of up to 5 hours a day, drive daily the truck/utility vehicle, use hands to finger and grasp, kneels, pulls, pushes, stoops, and lifts up to 50 lbs.; occasionally balances, climbs and crouches.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Reading, problem solving, and customer contact.
