Description

Essential Functions

  • Performs accurate and reproducible results of routine and complex manual and automated testing as ordered by the physician producing results in a timely manner
  • Performs and understands quality control programs including evaluation of values, documentation of errors and corrective action, and the maintenance of records in the appropriate logs
  • Performs and records scheduled equipment maintenance, troubleshooting of equipment problems, and provides immediate notification to department supervisor in the event of any malfunctions
  • Recognizes normal and life-threatening results and follows protocol for notification of results to the ordering physician along with complete and legible documentation on worksheets and in the LIS
  • Proficient operation of the LIS and other computer related programs. Maintains competency with changes and upgrades to each system
  • Participates in Proficiency Testing programs in addition to other departmental quality assurance programs
  • Comprehends the importance of specimen integrity and recognizes any events that may compromise the quality of testing and reporting of results
  • Consent to assume other duties as required by department supervisor


Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Lifting - Must be able to lift above shoulder height up to 10 lbs. as needed. In addition, must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis, multiple times a day replacing instrumentation reagents. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly/cart must be utilized
  • Pushing/Pulling - Must be able to push/pull up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly/cart must be utilized
  • Carry weight, lift - Must be able to carry reagents to instrumentation weighing up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly/cart must be utilized
  • Bending/Twisting/Stooping - Must be able to bend/twist/stoop to replace reagents, remove instrumentation waste, file racks of specimens, and in storing or supplies
  • Sitting/Standing - Must be able to constantly stand and walk for several hours in duration. Sitting is appropriate based on workload volume and particular testing being performed (example - microscopic work)
  • Smells - Ability to tolerate strong odors when disposing of specimens or reagents
  • Dexterity - Must be able to perform a large amount of repetitive hand movements by utilizing computers and opening/closing specimen containers

Travel

Based on staffing needs, staff may be required to commute to other regional laboratories to provide laboratory coverage which may also require changing work hours, additional shifts and/or weekends.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

Associate in Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related science along with the successful completion of an approved formal training program in Medical Technology.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience in a clinical laboratory setting involving the analysis of blood, tissue, and body fluids utilizing automated equipment and specialized instrumentation while performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously and accurately interpreting the results.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Active State of Florida license as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Registry with ASCP, AMT, or AAB is a plus.
