Shift: B (6:00 PM - 6:30 AM)

Reports to (Title): Facilities Specialist 

Location: Lakeland 

Position Summary

The Utilities Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all plant utility systems, with a strong emphasis on ammonia refrigeration. This includes equipment such as boilers, ammonia refrigeration systems, air compressors, HVAC systems, cooling towers, water treatment systems, and other critical infrastructure that supports manufacturing operations. The Utilities Technician ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards while minimizing downtime and supporting overall plant performance. 

Key Responsibilities 

Operate, monitor, and maintain plant utilities including ammonia refrigeration, steam, compressed air, chilled water, HVAC systems. 

Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance on utility equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability. 

Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues related to utility systems, with emphasis on ammonia refrigeration systems. 

Perform routine inspections, monitoring, and recording of operating conditions, including pressure, temperature, flow, and chemical levels. 

Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, PSM (Process Safety Management), RMP (Risk Management Program), and other regulatory requirements related to ammonia and utilities operations. 

Respond to equipment alarms, emergencies, and breakdowns to minimize impact on production. 

Maintain accurate maintenance and compliance records, logs, and reports. 

Collaborate with maintenance, production, and engineering teams to support plant operations and projects. 

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance energy efficiency, refrigeration system reliability, and overall plant performance. 

All other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications 

High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification preferred. 

Minimum of 2–4 years' experience in utilities, ammonia refrigeration, or industrial plant operations. 

Knowledge of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems (IIAR standards preferred). 

Experience with boilers, HVAC, air compressors, and water treatment systems. 

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and P&IDs. 

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in mechanical, electrical, and control systems. 

Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) preferred. 

RETA certification or equivalent ammonia refrigeration training strongly preferred. 

Must be able to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively. 

Physical & Work Environment Requirements 

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as climbing, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. 

Must be able to work in warm and cold environments, confined spaces, and at heights as required. 

Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as needed to support 24/7 operations. 

Exposure to loud noise, ammonia, moving equipment, and chemicals with proper PPE provided.

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation.
