Role OverviewÂ
 Â
The Process Safety Manager will lead the development and implementation of process safety systems in a battery recycling facility. This role ensures safe handling of lithium-ion and other battery chemistries, mitigates risks of fire, explosion, and chemical exposure, and drives compliance with environmental and occupational safety regulations. The manager will be a key partner in protecting employees, the community, and the environment while supporting sustainable recycling operations. Â

Key ResponsibilitiesÂ

• Process Safety LeadershipÂ
• Establish and maintain process safety management (PSM) programs tailored to battery recycling operations.Â
• Promote a proactive safety culture across plant operations, engineering, and maintenance teams.Â
• Hazard Identification & Risk ManagementÂ
• Conduct hazard analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA) for processes involving battery dismantling, shredding, and chemical recovery.Â
• Assess risks related to thermal runaway, fire, toxic gas release, and chemical spills.Â
• Implement safeguards for handling flammable electrolytes, heavy metals, and corrosive materials.Â
• Compliance & Regulatory OversightÂ
• Ensure compliance with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA fire codes, and local environmental regulations.Â
• Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and permitting requirements.Â
• Incident Investigation & Emergency PreparednessÂ
• Lead root cause analyses of process incidents (e.g., fires, chemical releases).Â
• Develop and test emergency response plans for battery-related hazards.Â
• Coordinate with local fire departments and environmental agencies.Â
• Training & AwarenessÂ
• Train employees on safe handling of lithium-ion batteries, chemical hazards, and emergency response.Â
• Build awareness of evolving industry standards and best practices.Â
• Continuous ImprovementÂ
• Monitor safety KPIs (incident rates, near misses, audit findings).Â
• Drive improvements in facility design, ventilation systems, fire suppression, and PPE usage.Â
• Stay current with innovations in battery recycling technologies and adapt safety practices accordingly. Â

QualificationsÂ

Required:Â
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental  Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).Â
• Experience: 3+ years in process safety, chemical manufacturing, or recycling industries; experience with lithium-ion batteries strongly preferred.Â
• Certifications: CSP, CCPS, or equivalent credentials desirable.Â
• Skills:Â
• Deep knowledge of OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and NFPA standards.Â
• Expertise in hazard analysis methodologies (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA).Â
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.Â
