Job DetailsJob Location: Appalachian Wireless Ivel - Ivel, KY 41642Position Type: Full TimeEast Kentucky Network – Appalachian Wireless Job Description Job Title: Outside Plant Technician Apprentice Department: Technical Reports To: Technical Operations Manager FLSA Status: Non-exempt EEO-1: 03 – Technicians SUMMARY: Performs a variety of duties including inspection of existing outside plant cable facilities, plus inspection of new cable construction. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists Outside Plant Technician in regular inspections of existing fiber optic cable routes on both the EKN fiber ring network and cell site fiber optic “spurs”. Work closely with contractors to ensure all safety and RUS standards are met. Helps outside plant technician update staking sheets to reflect any changes to existing cable routes. Contact utility companies in the event a violation is observed. And alternately, work with all utility companies if a violation is found with EKN cable. Works with Fiber Technicians to find, and repair EKN fiber breaks. Work with Outside Plant Technician and utilities on scheduling and completion of make-ready work. Assists Outside Plant Technician in Testing all fiber optic cable to ensure high quality before it is installed. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 1. Position requires high school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 2. Minimum 1 year experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 3. Requires basic understanding and/or experience in RUS specifications. Good math skills are required at a moderate level of advancement. Aware of OSHA safety requirements. Certified flagging experience is preferable. NICHE SKILLS: Requires basic outside plant cable construction & safety practices. Requires knowledge of industry terminology and general operating procedures relative to one’s own job. Average recruitment period is more than 3 months with maximum recruitment effort. MENTAL EFFORT AND ANALYTICAL ABILITY: Position requires some mental effort or analytical ability to gather and interpret information but is limited to situations where the problems are not difficult or complex. VISUAL AND/OR PHYSICAL STRAIN: Work frequently produces a high level of mental, visual and/or physical fatigue between 21% and 50% of work time. CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: This position requires contact with others within and/or outside the company (better than 50% of the time). Matters of some financial, procedural, or relational importance are discussed. The overall success of the Company may or may not be influenced by decisions made. INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT AND CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR: Work is performed in accordance with specific procedures, but incumbents must set priorities, organize work, and make occasional exceptions. Errors are identifiable but have relatively moderate impact in terms of cost, time, money, or public/employee good will. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Position has minimal or no responsibility for the work of others. Where there is responsibility, work done by subordinate Associates is primarily simple or routine in nature. Supervision requires frequent contact to assign, prioritize and check work. WORK CONDITIONS: Job involves frequent exposure to one or more unpleasant (noise, dust, etc.) or hazardous conditions 21% to 50% of total work time. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Climb stairs and/or ladders. Lift boxes weighing up to 150 pounds such as test equipment, tools, etc. Work under pressure to meet strict deadlines or respond to emergencies. Differentiate between colors. Travel daily and/or overnight Sit for long periods of time. Stand for long periods of time. Maintain attendance according to company policy. Provide on-call services upon short notice.
