Position Overview

We are seeking an Associate Electrical Software Engineer to join our Software Validation and Testing Team. In this role, you will support component‑level and spacecraft‑level testing across multiple AST engineering divisions. You will work closely with software developers and engineering teams to assist in the development, testing, and deployment of vehicle software, using both hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) and software‑in‑the‑loop (SIL) environments. This position is ideal for an engineer eager to grow their skills across electrical systems, software testing, and integrated spacecraft operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and support testing activities on component‑level and spacecraft‑level platforms.
  • Document test results, including post‑processing data and generating test reports.
  • Support investigations into test failures, anomalies, and root‑cause analysis.
  • Assist in developing test plans, procedures, and related documentation.
  • Serve as the on‑site electrical engineering representative during testing activities.
  • Ensure proper, safe, and effective use of Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE).
  • Track project deliverables and support team coordination.
  • Provide technical guidance and help maintain industry best practices across the team.
  • Collaborate with systems, electrical, and software engineers to support integrated operations and issue resolution.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field, preferably Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.

Experience

  • A minimum of 1–3 years of relevant engineering experience (internships or co‑ops may count toward experience).
  • Experience with environmental testing or spaceflight hardware is highly valued.
  • Experience programming in C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience using electrical and diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and DC power supplies.
  • Experience reading and interpreting circuit diagrams and schematics.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (preferably Git).
  • Comfort using command‑line tools in Linux or Windows environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of Software‑in‑the‑Loop (SIL) and Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) concepts.
  • Ability to design simple PCBs for testing or custom hardware tasks.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering verification and validation principles.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience with Speedgoat, dSPACE, or equivalent testing platforms.
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with grounding and ESD procedures.
  • Experience working in lab or cleanroom environments.

Soft Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within cross‑functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in testing, documentation, and data reporting.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and support fast‑paced testing environments.
  • Proactive mindset and willingness to learn new tools, techniques, and testing methods.

Technology Stack

  • Programming: C/C++, Python
  • Tools & Equipment: Oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, DC power supplies
  • Platforms: Linux and Windows
  • Version Control: Git
  • Additional Tools (preferred): MATLAB, Simulink, Speedgoat, dSPACE
