POSITION: Federal Work Study - First-Generation Mentor

DEPARTMENT: Student Success

 

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with other mentors and the Program Coordinator to design and deliver workshops, social events, and outreach activities.
  • Assist with logistics for events (room reservations, supplies, promotion, etc.)
  • Help create and update content for bulletin boards and resource stations in the First Gen space.
  • Lead or co-lead student-led initiatives such as projects, celebrations, or peer discussion groups.
  • Participate in community outreach to local high schools to build connections with future students.
  • Collect feedback from mentees through surveys conversations, or reflection activities.
  • Participate in evaluation efforts to assess the effectiveness of the program.
  • Communicate group progress, concerns, and successes to the Program Coordinator.
  • Offer ideas to improve communication, programming, and space usage based on student input.
  • Facilitate small group sessions focused on academic success, campus engagement, and personal development.
  • Build strong, supportive relationships with mentees and provide regular check-ins.
  • Help students navigate university systems such as the student portal, academic calendar, financial aid, and advising.
  • Offer individualized guidance based on mentee needs, and refer students to campus resources when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study and enrolled full time at the University of Saint Mary
  • Must be a first-generation college student enrolled in the First Generation program.
  • Minimum 3.2 Cumulative GPA required, 3.5 preferred 
  • Junior standing or above preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, leadership, and empathy.
  • Comfort with leading small groups and facilitating open discussions.
  • Familiarity with campus resources and student support services.
