Job Description

 

General Purpose of Job:  

Following established procedures obtains blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis for the patient population served by Sparrow Health System. Distributes specimens promptly to the laboratory, performs moderately complex point-of-care testing, and maintains clinical and professional competency.

 

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis.  Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

 

  • Verifies patient identity utilizing the established procedure.
  • Performs phlebotomy services accurately and efficiently.
  • Performs venipunctures, arterial punctures, blood cultures, micro collection technique (i.e., heel and finger punctures) according to policy.
  • Monitors blood collection schedule for STAT, Timed, and Routine collection and prioritizes the workload.
  • Utilizes SOFT lab to track and log specimens.
  • Demonstrates a positive, professional image when interacting with patients, staff, students, and others in the hospital.
  • Adheres to established policies for attendance, appearance, punctuality, and professional performance.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for professional growth and development.
  • Assists team leaders with quality improvement operations and direct patient care activities.
  • Responds to patient needs and meets their expectations.
  • Adheres to infection control policies for blood borne pathogens.
  • Serves as a role model by always adhering to the ICARE values.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPAA security procedures and protocols.
  • Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures and protects patient rights and confidentiality.

 

 

Job Requirements

Education • High School Diploma or GED • Successful completion of a formal phlebotomy education program/course OR Medical Assistant Program OR one-year experience as a phlebotomist OR completion of the Sparrow Laboratory Phlebotomy Trainee Program
Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Ability to read, follow directions, and perform procedures associated with specimen collection, handling, and processing. • Strong "customer first" focus • Ability to work well under highly stressful conditions • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, co-workers, and others • Basic computer knowledge • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job. • Previous phlebotomy experience. Preferred.
