What you will do

Johnson Controls is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer! In this role, you will be responsible for electrical analysis, detailed design, controls integration, and overall electrical performance of Enviro‑Tec HVAC equipment (air handlers, fan coils, blower coils). The focus spans on new‑product development, sustaining engineering, prototyping, laboratory validation, certification support, and production enablement. You will lead complex electrical development efforts—covering wiring architecture, schematics, harnesses, component selection, motor/drive systems, sensors, protection devices, panel/enclosure layouts, electric heat integration, A2L refrigerant detection, and agency compliance—while providing technical leadership across NPD teams.

This position is onsite based in Largo, FL. Candidates must be commuting distance to the facility, or able to relocate. Johnson Controls offers various relocation packages depending on your needs.

How you will do it

  • Electrical Design & System Integration

  • Define system electrical architecture, load analyses, and protective device coordination for AHU/FCU/BCU platforms.

  • Design and review wiring schematics, interconnects, and harnesses; develop panel, enclosure, and junction layouts for manufacturability and serviceability.

  • Integrate motors, VFDs/EC motors and controllers, sensors/actuators, and control interfaces (line‑ and low‑voltage).

  • Create and maintain electrical design standards, parts libraries, and specification documents; contribute selection rules for configurable/dynamic BOM generation.

  • Compliance, Certification & A2L (UL 60335 / UL 1995)

  • Interpret and implement UL 60335‑2‑40 and relevant UL/CSA/NEC requirements for electrical safety, wiring methods, creepage/clearance, component ratings, accessibility, and markings.

  • Create and maintain agency listing report inputs for electrical/electronic/control components; generate test plans, evidence, and corrective actions.

  • Lead coordination with Intertek/ETL and internal compliance teams for A2L refrigerant programs, including Refrigerant Detection Systems (RDS) integration, alarm thresholds, power and I/O, and Annex MM sensor‑location confirmation support.

  • Drive closure of agency non‑conformances and report updates; translate evolving regulatory guidance into product requirements and instructions.

  • Lab Validation, Prototypes & Field Performance

  • Define electrical test criteria and validation plans with the Largo Test Lab (heater rack verification, limit/relay logic, drive/controller behavior, fault handling).

  • Oversee prototype wiring builds and panel/enclosure fit‑ups; verify harness routings, labeling, service access, and heat management.

  • Analyze test data (current draw, temperature rise, EMI/functional behavior) and drive design updates to meet safety and performance requirements.

  • Manufacturing, Sourcing & Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Provide production‑ready electrical BOMs and routings; partner with manufacturing engineering on fixtures, work instructions, and DFMA improvements.

  • Evaluate suppliers and qualify new electrical components (heaters, contactors, sensors, relays, power supplies, drives); support cost, lead‑time, and obsolescence mitigation.

  • Support marketing, applications, sales engineering, and service with electrical product guidance, installation considerations, and troubleshooting inputs.

  • Generate clear drawings, wiring diagrams, block schematics, and installation/field wiring details in alignment with Largo drafting standards.

  • Author Engineering Change Orders (ECO/ECR), support DFMEA/PFMEA and root‑cause analyses, and implement corrective/preventive actions.

  • Mentor designers/engineers and promote standard work, libraries, and reusable templates.

What we look for

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Electrical or Controls Engineering.

  • 5+ years of electrical engineering experience.

  • Proficiency creating two‑dimensional electrical schematics (e.g., AutoCAD) and experience with BOM databases; 3D CAD exposure (SolidWorks) preferred.

  • Working knowledge of NEC, UL 1995, and UL 60335‑2‑40 as applied to equipment wiring, protection devices, and accessibility.

  • Ability to define wiring requirements and interpret drawings/diagrams; concise written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Hands‑on prototype and lab testing experience (heater racks, controllers, motor/drive systems, safety limits).

  • Familiarity with A2L refrigerant detection systems, wiring practices, and control responses; experience with Annex MM coordination a plus.

  • Experience with configurable platforms and dynamic BOM logic.

  • Cross‑functional collaboration with compliance agencies (Intertek/ETL), manufacturing, sourcing, service, and field teams.
