Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant performs a wide variety of medical and clinical support functions in an outpatient clinic setting. Responsibilities include providing initial patient triage, registration, and administrative services, assisting with direct patient care, and performing medical procedures of a routine nature as determined by established protocols, policies, and procedures.

The Medical Assistant records and updates medical histories, verifies contact information in patient files, schedules appointments and procedures, obtains medication authorizations, and provides appointment reminders. The position also includes performing standard care procedures such as taking vitals, conducting routine tests, responding to messages, pre-charting, and abstracting documentation as needed.

The ideal candidate must be able to maintain efficiency in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, demonstrating a pleasant and professional demeanor with patients and team members.

The incumbent will carry-out her/his duties by adhering to the highest standards of ethical and moral conduct, acts in the best interest of Three Crosses Regional Hospital, and fully supports the mission, vision, and values of Three Crosses Regional Hospital. The incumbent will have knowledge of health care systems, and have demonstrated ability to interact, relate to, work with, and support the activities of a diverse workforce.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform various administrative and clinical duties under the direction of clinic administration and/or the clinician.

  • Assist patients as necessary with walking, transferring, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparing for exams.

  • Utilize the electronic health records (EHR) system to collect pertinent patient history consistent with organizational guidelines.

  • Take vital signs and perform diagnostic procedures such as electrocardiograms (EKG), stress tests, ETTs, and Event/Holter Monitor tests.

  • Perform screenings consistent with provider guidelines.

  • Prepare and administer medications, including intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections, as directed by the provider.

  • Transmit prescription refills as directed.

  • Communicate appropriately and clearly with patients, co-workers, and management.

  • Prepare charts for provider review, ensuring all results (labs, imaging, etc.) are available prior to the visit.

  • Assist in completion of forms and documentation for provider review and signature.

  • Schedule appointments and procedures; answer calls and messages in a timely manner.

  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services as needed.

  • Perform monthly, weekly, and annual inspection and testing of equipment used in the clinic.

  • Recognize and interpret basic heart rhythms on EKGs and rhythm strips.

  • Maintain effective communication with patients, explaining procedures clearly within the scope of practice.

  • Ensure physician orders for procedures are entered accurately and consult appropriate resources to clarify orders when necessary.

 Education and Experience

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; will consider combination of education and experience 
  • Required: 6-12 months of experience in a health care environment
  • Required: BLS from American Heart Association
  • Preferred: Certified Medical Assistant
