Job Summary

The Coding Supervisor is responsible for leading and overseeing all hospital coding operations while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of code assignments, proper reimbursement, and regulatory compliance. This position supervises coding staff, monitors quality and productivity, manages revenue cycle indicators, and collaborates with Utilization Review, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), Billing, and Compliance teams to support organizational goals and financial performance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all hospital inpatient, outpatient, and physician coding operations.
  • Ensure accurate assignment of DRGs, CPT codes, HCPCS codes, and related coding classifications.
  • Manage coding work queues and ensure timely completion of coding activities.
  • Supervise coding staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance monitoring, and disciplinary processes.
  • Conduct coding education and training sessions and serve as a resource for coding-related questions.
  • Collaborate with the Billing Department to resolve denials, edits, and reimbursement issues.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational compliance plans, coding guidelines, and payer requirements.
  • Foster a productive, engaged, and collaborative team environment.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance coding efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Maintain strong professional relationships with physicians, leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in Health Information Management (or equivalent combination of education and experience) and/or RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of coding guidelines, billing rules, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coding supervisory experience in an acute care facility preferred.
