About Shepherd Electric Supply

Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through.

Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place.

Why This Role Matters

The Pipe Yard is one of the most visible parts of how Shepherd delivers on its promise. When a contractor pulls up to pick up conduit, they are trusting that what was ordered is staged correctly, counted accurately, and ready to load. That trust starts here.

This is not a background role. The Warehouse Associate – Pipe Yard is on the front line of fulfillment — pulling pipe and conduit for customers and branches, working as part of a crew, operating equipment safely, and keeping the yard organized and accurate every shift. What you do directly affects whether contractors can build on schedule and whether Shepherd keeps its word.

If you take pride in physical work done right, accuracy matters to you, and you like being part of a crew that holds itself to a standard — this role was built for you.

Work Shift and Hours:

  • Monday - Friday, 10:00am - 7:00pm

Compensation Details:

  • The expected pay rate for this position is starting at $20.00 per hour depending on experience.

How This Role Connects to Our Compass

  • We Keep Our Promises: Customers and branches count on accurate picks, correct counts, and material that is ready when they arrive. A wrong count or a missed pull is not a minor inconvenience — it delays a job site. Accuracy and follow-through are how you keep the promise every shift.

  • We Stay Hungry: You look for better ways to organize the yard, improve staging flow, and reduce errors. When something is not working, you say so. Continuous improvement in a pipe yard is real and it matters.

  • We Grow Together: You work within a crew. That means communicating clearly, covering for each other when volume spikes, and making sure nobody is left without what they need. Yard success is crew success.

  • We Own It: When a count is off or material is staged in the wrong location, you address it — you do not walk past it. Ownership here means the yard reflects your standard, not just what you were assigned.

  • We Go Above & Beyond: You anticipate the next pull. You stage material before it is asked for. You notice when the yard needs attention before it becomes a problem. That is what above-and-beyond looks like in this role.

Key Duties - What you will do and what it takes.

Material Pulling & Fulfillment

  • Pull EMT, PVC conduit, strut, galvanized/IMC, and related material for customers and other branches

  • Verify counts on every pull — accuracy is non-negotiable in this role

  • Stage completed orders clearly for customer pickup or branch transfer

  • Communicate clearly with the crew when quantities are short, damaged, or unclear

Loading & Unloading

  • Load and offload trucks safely and accurately

  • Confirm outbound loads match the order before the truck leaves

  • Handle inbound freight carefully and flag overages, shortages, or damage immediately

Equipment Operation

  • Operate sit-down forklift and pipe bander in accordance with safety standards

  • Complete pre-shift equipment inspections and report any maintenance needs before operating

  • Certification required or ability to obtain through onsite training

Yard Organization & Maintenance

  • Keep the pipe yard organized, clean, and navigable — aisles clear, product stored correctly, hazards addressed

  • Perform general yard maintenance as needed to maintain a safe and functional work environment

  • Restock and reorganize material locations after pulls so the next order starts clean

Crew & Communication

  • Work within a crew — communicate proactively, cover shifts in volume spikes, and hold the standard together

  • Flag discrepancies, missing material, or safety concerns to your supervisor without delay

What Success Looks Like - After 90 days, you and your supervisor should both be able to point to these markers:

  • Pulls are accurate — counts are right, product is staged, nothing leaves wrong

  • The yard is organized, product locations are current, and the space is ready for the next crew

  • Equipment is operated safely and inspected every shift before use

  • You are communicating proactively with your crew — not waiting to be asked

  • Customers and branches can trust that what they ordered is ready when they arrive

  • You have identified at least one area where the yard can run better and brought it to your supervisor

Who Thrives Here - This role is a strong fit if:

  • You care about accuracy — a wrong count bothers you, and you recount before you walk away

  • You work well in a crew — you communicate, you cover, and you show up ready to contribute

  • You take ownership of your area — the yard reflects your standard, not just your task list

  • Physical, outdoor work suits you — you are comfortable in a yard environment across seasons

  • You operate equipment carefully and follow safety procedures without needing to be reminded

  • You are on time, consistent, and reliable — the crew and customers depend on it

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Prior warehouse, yard, or material handling experience preferred

  • Forklift certification (sit-down) required or ability to obtain through onsite training

  • Pipe bander experience a plus; training provided

  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the role, including lifting heavy material and working outdoors

  • Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential — overtime required when needed

  • Electrical product knowledge is a plus but not required

  • Ability to successfully complete pre-employment screening requirements
