Description

聽An Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and operational readiness of all emergency response vehicles within a rural county. These vehicles include Fire Apparatus, specialty rescue units, Aerial Ladder trucks and related support equipment. In rural communities, where distances are greater and resources may be limited, the EVT鈥檚 expertise is essential for timely and effective emergency response.


Responsibilities

路 Inspection and Preventative Maintenance

路 Conduct routine inspections of all emergency vehicles to identify wear, damage, or mechanical issues. Develop and follow a strict preventative maintenance schedule to minimize breakdowns and maximize vehicle performance. This includes regular checks of brakes, tires, suspension, lights, sirens, emergency lighting systems, and onboard electronics.

路 Preventative Maintenance to include Fluid changes, Annual Inspections.

路 Documentation and Compliance

路 Maintain accurate service records in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Ensure all repairs and maintenance actions adhere to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, and manufacturer guidelines. Prepare reports for supervisors and regulatory agencies as needed.

路 Emergency and On-Call Services

路 Respond to urgent repair calls in the field, sometimes under adverse weather or hazardous conditions. Provide rapid diagnostics, roadside repairs, or coordinate the safe towing and recovery of disabled emergency vehicles.

路 Inventory and Parts Management

路 Collaboration and Communication

路 Work closely with fire personnel to understand operational needs, vehicle histories, and any reported issues. Communicate effectively to explain technical problems and solutions to non-technical staff. Provide guidance on safe vehicle operation and post-repair procedures as needed.

路 Upgrades and Modifications

路 Training and Continuing Education



Requirements


路 High school diploma or GED; vocational or technical school training in automotive or diesel technology preferred.

路 Valid driver鈥檚 license

路 ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications; EVT Certification Commission credentials highly desirable.

路 Experience in automotive, truck, heavy equipment, or fleet maintenance (minimum 2-3 years; experience with emergency vehicles preferred).

路 Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and computer-controlled systems.

路 Proficiency with diagnostic tools, software, and schematics.

路 Ability to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and operate under physically demanding conditions.

路 Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

路 Clear written and verbal communication; record-keeping skills.

路 Commitment to safety, attention to detail, and high ethical standards.
