Job Description:

Department: Personal Care Services (PCS)

Employment Type: Part-Time, Hourly (~25 hours/week)

Work Model: Field-based, multi-branch coverage

Reports To: Care Coordinator / Field Supervisor (assignment-based)

The Special Care Attendant (SCA) – Floater provides in-home personal care and support services to elderly and/or disabled clients across multiple branch locations. This role is designed to stabilize care delivery by filling short-notice callouts, temporary coverage gaps, and interim assignments while permanent staffing is secured.

This is a highly flexible, on-demand role that requires adaptability, reliability, and strong communication skills. SCA Floaters must be comfortable with variable assignments, diverse client needs, and travel within assigned coverage areas. While part-time in hours, this role carries elevated responsibility due to its impact on continuity of care and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care services to unstaffed or temporarily unassigned clients within the service area
  • Accept assignments on a short-notice basis to support coverage needs
  • Assist clients with:
    • Bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, and personal care
    • Meal preparation and feeding assistance
    • Light housekeeping (cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, laundry, tidying living areas)
    • Essential shopping and errands (excluding client transport)
  • Observe and report changes in client condition, medication compliance concerns, or safety issues
  • Communicate promptly with Care Coordinators regarding assignment status, issues, or barriers
  • Submit accurate and timely documentation, timesheets, and required reports
  • Follow all agency policies, scope-of-practice guidelines, and safety protocols
  • Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements
  • Represent Elara Caring professionally and uphold the organization’s mission and values
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on coverage needs

Critical Role Expectations

  • High flexibility with minimal assignment restrictions
  • Willingness to travel within assigned coverage areas
  • Comfort supporting a wide range of clients and case types
  • Strong reliability and attendance
  • Clear, proactive communication — especially when issues arise
  • Adherence to compliance, safety, and escalation protocols
  • Due to liability and safety requirements:
  • Caregivers may not transport clients in personal vehicles
  • Strict adherence to scope of practice is required at all times

Schedule & Hours

  • Approximately 25 hours per week
  • Daytime coverage, generally between 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Schedule varies based on branch needs and coverage demands
  • Assignments may change with short notice
  • This is not a fixed-schedule or single-client role.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to work irregular or changing hours as needed
  • Physically demanding role in a potentially high-stress environment
  • Ability to lift, move, and transfer clients (up to 50–100 lbs as required)
  • Full range of motion (standing, bending, lifting, reaching)
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, and cleaning chemicals
  • Compliance with occupational safety and bloodborne pathogen protocols
