Job Description

I. JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Practitioner (APRN) provides direct care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization, while complying with laws and regulations in maintaining patient information.  This position leads the coordination of care for patients by applying effective decision making skills based on patient/family healthcare needs and priorities.

II. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop therapeutic relationships with wound and ostomy patients and their families, using comprehensive assessment of medical history, symptoms, examination findings, and treatment response.
  • Provide advanced wound and ostomy care, including assessments, debridement (per scope), dressing selection, negative pressure therapy oversight, and post‑operative ostomy education and management.
  • Deliver consultative inpatient wound/ostomy services and collaborate continuously with physicians, hospital nursing units, surgeons, and other clinical team members.
  • Conduct up to one clinic day per week to provide outpatient follow‑up, reassessment, and continuity of care.
  • Communicate and document concisely and accurately, ensuring clear interpretation of the patient’s condition, wound progression, and treatment plan.
  • Collaborate with the Wound Healing Center with Vein Services nursing team to ensure continuity between inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Participate in discharge planning and patient education related to wound care, ostomy management, and long‑term skin integrity.
  • Apply evidence-based practices, clinical pathways, and current wound/ostomy standards of care.
  • Utilize available technology, resources, and inter-professional teamwork to achieve quality outcomes.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through ongoing learning, contributing to wound care best practices, and maintaining regulatory and ethical standards.
  • Perform other duties within the nurse practitioner scope as assigned.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function.

III. JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required: 

  • Master’s degree in Nursing
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • Current APRN national board certification
  • Current Kansas APRN license
  • Experience with wound care and/or acute care environments
  • Ability to work primarily in the inpatient setting    

Preferred: 

  • Wound certification (WOCN, WCC, CWON, CWCN, or similar)
  • Ostomy experience, including post‑operative education and management
  • Experience in both inpatient and outpatient wound care settings
  • Prior relevant clinic or specialty experience
