Fire Prevention Lieutenant

As the Fire Prevention Lieutenant you will perform a variety of technical and specialty work within the Fire Prevention Division under the direction of the Division Chief of Prevention/Fire Marshal. You will be completing public education, fire code enforcement, and fire investigations for Leawood residents and businesses. 

Your expertise will help drive operational efficiency and effectiveness, supporting the City’s mission to serve the Leawood community to the best of our abilities. You will participate in the Fire Department’s ongoing accreditation activities to help maintain its International Accredited agency standing and Insurance Services Office (ISO) Rating of 1.

  • Have great organizational and time management skills.
  • Handle various tasks and shifting priorities with professionalism, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Have experience in presenting public fire safety education and completing fire and arson investigations. 

Your work responsibilities may include: 

  • Conducting inspections of commercial, residential, and public assembly buildings; conducts technical inspections on various facilities for operational based code and regulatory compliance, including hazardous materials.
  • Responds to complaints of fire and life safety hazards in buildings or residences within the City. 
  • Issuing written notices of code violations identified while performing fire and life safety inspections.
  • Inspecting and assisting with the issuance of permits for Fire code regulated operations such as fireworks displays, open burning, and the use of temporary tent/membrane type of structures. 
  • Performs inspections of blasting operations and blasting sites. 
  • Responding to significant fire incidents.
  • Conducting origin and cause fire investigations for reported incidents when requested by the Fire Department or Incident Commander. 
  • Developing, presenting and evaluating fire prevention training, fire investigations, prevention training and informational programs for the public.


The general hours of the position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Fire Prevention Lieutenant may be required to come in during off hours to complete fire and arson investigations. 


Minimum Requirements: Associate’s degree or greater from an accredited institution of higher learning with a minimum of six (6) years of increasingly responsible fire service experience in a career paid position. Completion of Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Operations Level, Inspector I, Instructor I, Officer I, NFPA compliant coursework. Must have and maintain a minimum of a CPR/AED/Basic First Aid Certification.

Preferred Requirements: Certification as a KS Emergency Medical Technician (KBEMS). Fire Inspector I and II Certification from ICC. Fire Investigator Certification from an approved entity (IAAI, NFAI, IFSAC, Pro-Board, or KSFMO). Fire Officer Designation through the Commission on Professional Credentialing. Must be able to obtain within a timeline established by the Fire Marshal and/or Fire Chief upon hire or promotion an Expert Witness Credential in fire investigation through an accredited agency (KSFMO, IAAI, NFA, ATF, FBI, preferred) and Youth Firesetter.
