Position Overview

The Materials Manager owns the flow of material and product through our metal stamping and forming operation β€” from purchasing raw material and components, to production scheduling, to finished-goods inventory and on-time shipment. This role builds and maintains the Master Schedule, balances labor hours, material availability, and machine capacity, and keeps every essential stakeholder aligned so customer commitments are met. The Materials Manager also leads procurement: issuing purchase orders, managing supplier relationships, and driving the most economical, reliable path to getting material on the floor.

Key Responsibilities

Production Scheduling & Planning

  • Schedule all production using ERP and Visual management systems, prioritizing and coordinating across shifts for smooth transitions.
  • Calculate production needs based on customer shipment requirements, demand, and forecasting.
  • Create work orders from customer demand and forecast data.
  • Develop and maintain the production schedule and overall production plan.
  • Schedule to maintain optimum inventory levels that support on-time delivery to customer requirements.
  • Communicate any risk to schedule compliance to the Operations Manager, Quality, and the Shipping/Receiving Supervisor, and drive resolutions.

Purchasing & Supplier Management

  • Purchase the parts and supplies needed to support the production schedule (e.g., cardboard, components, packaging).
  • Manage vendors and suppliers to ensure quality, reliability, competitive pricing, continuity of supply, and on-time delivery.
  • Maintain supplier scorecards and communicate quarterly results.
  • Manage supplier debits.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement purchasing policies and procedures β€” consistent with corporate policy β€” that support the most economical and efficient procurement of material.

Inventory & Systems

  • Generate a weekly cycle count list and route it to the Shipping/Receiving Supervisor; investigate and reconcile any inventory discrepancies in Visual.
  • Track outgoing scrap and record totals by month-end.
  • Manage Engineering Masters and ensure new products are set up accurately and promptly in Visual, working cross-functionally with Sales, Quality, and Operations.
  • Support Visual implementation, with the opportunity to grow into the Visual Superuser role.

Leadership & Relationships

  • Manage, evaluate, and coach direct reports, including the Shipping/Receiving Supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key customers.

Month-End / Year-End Close

  • Close out work orders with quantities received.
  • Verify negative inventory transactions.
  • Complete all receivables and inventory adjustments.
  • Verify that all sales transactions are invoiced.
  • Run month-end and year-end reports and distribute to Accounts Payable.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's or associate degree preferred, but not required.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience with a degree, or 10+ years of relevant experience without one.
  • Proficiency navigating ERP systems; familiarity with Visual is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the steel and metal stamping industries preferred.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, with strong Excel proficiency especially valued.
  • Experience with freight scheduling and freight cost negotiation is a plus.
  • Excellent project management, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • A demonstrated desire and aptitude to take Extreme Ownership of the role.
