As a student in an approved registered nurse or practical nurse school of nursing, the Nurse Extern student participates in clinical work under the direction of an RN. The Nurse Extern assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patient’s highest level of wellness working cooperatively with others as part of the healthcare team and performs designated clinical procedures and nonclinical support tasks within the nurse extern scope.Position Details:
Mercy Lebanon Summer 2026 Nurse Extern Program
Are you interested in gaining more clinical experience during your school break while earning extra money? If the answer is yes, Mercy’s extern program may be just what you are looking for. Our Externs will have the opportunity to gain additional preceptor clinical experiences while getting paid an hourly wage.
Participating in a Mercy Externship this summer will help you...
- Better understand the nurse role in an acute care facility
- Build more confidence in providing direct and indirect patient care
- Engage in additional clinical preceptor time to increase approved nursing skills under the direction of your preceptor:
- IV therapy
- Foley care
- NG tube care and tube feeding
- ostomy care
- POC, phlebotomy and specimen collection
- simple dressing changes
- Participate in head-to-toe assessment
- Trach care

Orientation will start May 18th with the externship running from June 1st-July 31st.Â
The Mercy Nurse Externship Program is an 8-week paid program taking place in the summer. Working alongside an RN preceptor, nurse externs will get a real-world look into their post-licensure career that clinical time doesn't offer. This program is designed to assist nursing students in skill development and improve confidence that can be carried forward throughout their nursing career. Nurse externs will be provided instructor-led lectures and simulation experiences.
Externs will have the opportunity to rotate through the below units:
- Med/Surg
- Wound Care
- Step Down/ICU
- L&D
- ED
- OR
- Rolla: Infusion Clinic & Surgery Center
Education:Â Enrolled in an approved registered or practical nursing program
Licensure:Â Â
Certifications:Â BLS
Physical Requirements:
•   Position requires the ability to push, pull, and/or lift 50 lbs on a regular basis.
•   Position requires prolonged standing and walking during each shift.
•   Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.
