SUMMARY OF POSITION 

 

The Lead CNC Programmer / Machining Lead is responsible for leading machining operations from programming through production on the shop floor. This position serves as the technical leader for CNC programming, setup development, and process optimization while also supporting daily shop operations and acting as the lead point of contact in the absence of the Machining Supervisor.

This role will oversee setups, ensure production readiness, support operators and setters, assist with material flow, and step in to organize workflow and staffing needs as required. The position plays a critical role in maintaining throughput, quality, and efficiency across the machining department, with a primary focus on Swiss lathes (Tornos), CNC lathes, and EDM equipment.

 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  1. Serve as the lead programmer and technical resource for the machining department
  2. Develop CNC programs from 3D models using CAM software (Mastercam preferred)
  3. Select tooling, define machining strategies, establish work coordinates, and create setup documentation
  4. Lead and support first article development, prove-outs, and production release
  5. Troubleshoot machining processes including chip control, chatter, tool life, and cycle time optimization
  6. Oversee and assist with machine setups and changeovers across the shop
  7. Provide technical support to operators and setters to ensure quality and efficiency
  8. Perform and support in-process and final inspection of precision aerospace components
  9. Upload/download programs using DNC systems and maintain revision control
  10. Ensure compliance with all quality standards and documentation requirements
  11. Material Handling & Shop Support Responsibilities
  12. Support material handling activities, including staging raw material, moving work-in-process (WIP), and transferring finished goods between operations
  13. Coordinate with tool room, inspection, and production control to ensure material availability and flow for scheduled work
  14. Assist in loading/unloading bar feeders, material racks, and machine staging areas
  15. Ensure proper identification, traceability, and handling of aerospace materials throughout the process
  16. Support general shop organization and cleanliness to maintain safe and efficient workflow
  17. Leadership / Operational Responsibilities
  18. Act as the lead on the floor and help coordinate daily production activities
  19. Assist in prioritizing work, organizing schedules, and ensuring machines are properly staffed and running
  20. Step in to support or direct shop activities in the absence of the Machining Supervisor
  21. Help train and mentor operators, setters, and junior programmers
  22. Identify opportunities for process improvements, cycle time reduction, and cost savings
  23. Support continuous improvement initiatives within the machining department

 

 

 

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent required

 

CNC certificate or technical training preferred, or equivalent hands-on experience

 

7+ years CNC machining experience required

 

3+ years experience with Swiss lathes (Tornos), CNC lathes, and/or EDM preferred

 

Proven experience in developing new parts from print/model through production

 

Strong experience with CAM software (Mastercam preferred)

 

Experience with aerospace materials such as Inconel, Haynes, and stainless alloys

strongly preferred

 

Strong background in precision inspection and quality standards

 

 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
