The Detention Equipment (DEC) Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day field execution of detention equipment installation on correctional facility projects. This includes security doors, frames, locking systems, hardware, and related assemblies, ensuring all work is installed safely, correctly, and in accordance with project specifications and schedule.
This role leads field crews, coordinates with other trades (including SEC and precast teams), and ensures that all detention systems are properly installed, tested, and ready for commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Execution
- Lead and supervise all on-site DEC installation activities
- Manage install crews and subcontractors
- Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification
- Maintain daily jobsite presence and control
Installation Oversight
- Oversee installation of:
- Security doors and frames
- Detention hardware and locking systems
- Sliding doors, gates, and specialty systems
- Additional specialty detention systems
- Ensure proper alignment, fit, and function of all components
- Verify installation meets drawings, specifications, and detention standards
Scheduling & Coordination
- Execute project schedule in coordination with Project Manager
- Coordinate daily and weekly work plans
- Sequence work with:
- Precast installation
- Structural trades
- Security Electronics (SEC) teams
- Identify and mitigate schedule impacts
Quality Control
- Inspect all work to ensure compliance with design and performance requirements
- Identify deficiencies and ensure corrective action
- Maintain high standards for workmanship and system functionality
Safety Management
- Enforce all company and OSHA safety standards
- Conduct jobsite safety meetings and inspections
- Ensure proper use of tools, equipment, and PPE
- Maintain a safe working environment
SEC Integration Support
- Coordinate closely with SEC teams for system integration
- Ensure proper installation of locking devices, conduits, and interfaces
- Assist with system testing and functionality verification
Material & Logistics Management
- Coordinate delivery, staging, and handling of materials
- Track inventory and ensure availability of required components
- Prevent damage and ensure proper storage of equipment
Field Problem Solving
- Identify and resolve installation issues in real time
- Coordinate with Project Manager and engineering for solutions
- Adapt to site conditions while maintaining quality and schedule
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete daily reports and track progress
- Document issues, delays, and field changes
- Utilize project management tools (e.g., Procore) for reporting, documentation, and communication
- Communicate regularly with Project Manager and Operations Manager
Commissioning & Closeout
- Support system testing and commissioning activities
- Ensure all detention equipment is fully operational
- Assist with punch list completion and final inspections
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Technical training or trade background preferred
Experience
- 5–10+ years in:
- Construction or field supervision
- Detention equipment, steel systems, or specialty installation
- Experience with:
- Correctional facility projects (strongly preferred)
- Multi-trade coordination (DEC / SEC / precast)
Skills
- Strong leadership and crew management skills
- Ability to read and interpret:
- Construction drawings
- Shop drawings
- Specifications
- Knowledge of:
- Mechanical installation
- Basic electrical coordination
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability
- Experience with Procore or similar construction management software is a plus
Certifications (Preferred)
- OSHA 10 or 30
- Equipment operation certifications
- First Aid / CPR
