Job Description

Recreation Therapist 

About the Position:

The incumbent in this position is responsible for the planning and supervision of various types of recreational activities; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; exercising initiative and independent judgment; and working with mentally ill clients.

Typical job functions include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and implementing therapeutic recreational programs and activities for an assigned caseload of patients.
  • Conducting interviews, tests and other procedures to evaluate the patient’s needs, attitudes, interests and abilities.
  • Developing a therapeutic intervention plan based on observations, tests and other information, evaluating patient’s participation in program activities and progress towards established goals and objectives and documenting response to various treatments and activities.
  • Performing supervisory duties on a limited basis

Job Type/Salary:

  • The salary range is based on experience, tenure and certifications: 

  • Annual Salary is $42,000.00/$20.19 hr

  • Occasional weekend and holiday coverage may be required 
  • The FLSA Status is Non-Exempt for this Position. The EEO Category is Professional.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy, outdoor recreation, physical education or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Additional Requirements: 

✅ Must have a valid driver’s license and be open to job-related travel (e.g., training). 
✅ Participation in an on-call rotation unless exempted.
✅Upon appointment, incumbents designated by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services shall complete certification in one of the following required Departmental sponsored trainings in case management:  Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager – Adult; Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager – Child, Adolescent and Family; or Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager – Dual Certification.

About us: Griffin Memorial Hospital (GMH) is in Norman, Oklahoma, and serves all 77 counties in Oklahoma as the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) treatment center for adults.  GMH provides community crisis stabilization and residential treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health and trauma related conditions.  
 
Drug and Alcohol Pre-employment and Preplacement Testing:  Upon a conditional offer of employment, applicants for safety sensitive positions shall be required to submit to urinalysis to test for drugs. Appointment to a safety sensitive position shall be contingent upon a negative drug test result. 
 
THIS AGENCY REQUIRES COVERAGE OF 24 HOURS, 7 DAYS PER WEEK. WORK HOURS AND LOCATION MAY VARY DEPENDING ON BUSINESS NECESSITY. EMPLOYEES MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK WEEKENDS AND OVERTIME.
