Job Description Summary:

The Department/Program of Modern Languages & Literatures at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a two-year, non-tenure-track Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures (Hispanic Studies) instructional position that will begin August 10, 2026.

We seek an individual with expertise in Spanish language instruction, from Beginner to Advanced levels, as well as expertise in modern & contemporary (19th-21st centuries) cultural production in the Iberian Peninsula, with a preferred focus on Queer Studies, and/or the Franco regime, and/or Theater & Performance. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a 3-3 teaching load. While teaching obligations will focus primarily on Spanish language instruction, the successful candidate must demonstrate ability to occasionally teach compelling courses in their field of expertise for Hispanic Studies majors & minors, and/or for non-majors as part of W&M’s COLL curriculum.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or ABD in Hispanic Studies, or closely related field, at the time appointment begins on August 10, 2026.

  • Native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish.

  • 2+ years successful experience teaching Spanish language at all levels of the curriculum (beginner to advanced) and at the university level, in the US.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in modern & contemporary (19th-21st centuries) cultural production in the Iberian Peninsula, with the ability to teach courses on Queer Studies, and/or the Franco regime, and/or Theater & Performance.

  • Previous experience teaching interdisciplinary courses in Hispanic Literary & Cultural Studies.

  • Native or near-native proficiency in a non-Castilian language spoken in the Iberian Peninsula relevant to the candidate’s research and/or teaching.

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students.

  • This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.
