Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Safety-Sensitive

I. Job Summary

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a safety-sensitive position responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within a clinical setting. This role involves performing comprehensive patient assessments, executing life-saving interventions, and supporting providers with urgent care procedures. Because this position involves the direct handling of patient health and safety, it requires a high degree of alertness, sound clinical judgment, and strict adherence to safety protocols.


II. Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment & Patient Care

  • Triage & Assessment: Perform thorough initial assessments for patients; accurately obtain vital signs, medical histories, and presenting symptoms.
  • Provider Support: Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with diagnostic procedures, treatments, and efficient patient flow.
  • Monitoring: Vigilantly monitor patient status, recognizing subtle changes and escalating concerns to clinical leadership or providers immediately.
  • Patient Education: Provide clear, professional instructions regarding care plans, follow-up, and treatment expectations.

Emergency Response & Interventions

  • Clinical Procedures: Administer treatments and interventions (medications, oxygen, etc.) strictly within the EMT scope of practice and according to clinic protocols.
  • Emergency Readiness: Respond effectively to medical emergencies within the clinic, maintaining composure and following advanced life support procedures in high-pressure situations.

Documentation, Compliance & Safety

  • EHR Management: Maintain precise, timely, and HIPAA-compliant documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Quality & Safety: Adhere to all EngageMED safety policies, state/federal regulations, and infection control standards to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Equipment Readiness: Regularly inspect, calibrate, and restock medical equipment to ensure the facility is fully prepared for emergency scenarios at all times.

III. Job Requirements & Qualifications

Education & Licensure:

  • EMT Certification: Active state or national certification (Required).
  • Education: Completion of an accredited EMT program (Required).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS): Current certification (Required).
  • Advanced Certifications: ACLS or PALS (Preferred).

Skills & Experience:

  • Clinical Judgment: Strong assessment and critical thinking skills in time-sensitive environments.
  • Communication: Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate empathetically with patients.
  • Technical Savvy: Proficiency with EHR systems and medical database management.

IV. Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain active throughout the clinic for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull patients and heavy medical equipment as required by the physical nature of emergency care.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends based on clinic needs.
