About Us
At Onterris, we build careers grounded in purpose,Ā responsibilityĀ and real-world impact.
āFor Planet and Progressā is our north star that guides everything we do. We believe environmental responsibility and human progress are interconnected,Ā interwovenĀ and international. Our scientists, engineers, field teams,Ā consultantsĀ and professionals collaborate across disciplines and geographies, guiding industries and governments, ensuring that communities and environments thrive.
When you join us,Ā youāreĀ not just forging aĀ career,Ā youāreĀ joining a movement. A movement for better thinking, smarterĀ solutionsĀ and lasting impact.
Together, we will advance our way of life and protect the integrity of our environment every step of the way.
A Day in the LifeĀ
CT LIMS is our most significant piece of custom-built enterprise software: a proprietary Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that runs production operations across multipleĀ OnterrisĀ labs and carries a live, real-time Workday integration. It is a strategic assetĀ despite its legacy codebase.Ā The team is doing the disciplined work to decide this systemās future: codebase archaeology, durableĀ documentationĀ and architecture readiness aheadĀ of aĀ modernizationĀ effort.Ā The build starts fast.Ā This is the engineer who helps make that build real.Ā YouāllĀ bring modern engineering rigor (Spec-Driven, Test-First, AI-Augmented) to a system that has run for years on hard-won domain knowledge and a long-lived legacy codebase.Ā YouāllĀ reverse-engineer what exists, document it so any competent engineer can navigate it and help architect what comes next. One level down from owning theĀ corporateĀ transformation,Ā you are the senior builder who turns specs and architecture decisions into working, tested software.Ā YouāllĀ partner closely with the Staff Engineer,Ā seniorĀ LabsĀ developers,Ā the cloud and landing-zone team, the platformĀ architectsĀ and lab leadership. This is not pureĀ archaeologyĀ and it is not a blank page. It is both at once.Ā
The compensation range for this role is $200,000 - $210,000 USD,Ā commensurateĀ with experience, skills, and geographic location.
To thrive in this role,Ā you'llĀ be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:Ā
Build through Spec-Driven Development (SDD)Ā
Work āBlueprints Before Bricksā: the design is clarified in a Markdown specification before code is written.Ā
Author specifications and architecture-as-code in Markdown and Mermaid.js, committed to Git alongside the code.Ā
HelpĀ establishĀ the templates and review habits that make spec-first development the default.Ā
Deliver test-first development (TDD)Ā
Build the automated test coverage that lets the team move fast with confidence.Ā
Hold the line on coverage standards, particularly for AI-generated code.Ā
Implement architectural guardrails that keep modular boundaries from eroding back into a monolith.Ā
Use AI as a force multiplierĀ
Use Cursor and Claude Code as primary instruments for codebase archaeology,Ā documentationĀ and prototyping.Ā
Contribute toĀ the .cursorrulesĀ and prompt libraries that encode our architectural standards.Ā
Apply judgment about when AI accelerates (boilerplate, syntax, archaeology), when to collaborate (domain logic) and when to write manually (data integrity, edge cases).Ā
Reverse-engineer and document the legacy systemĀ
Produce module-level documentation: purpose, inputs and outputs, dependencies, dataĀ modelsĀ and known technical debt.Ā
Build data-flow diagrams for the sample lifecycle, Workday integration, billing and invoicing triggers, instrument interfaces and user authentication and authorization.Ā
Contribute to the integration inventory and technical-debt register, triagingĀ componentsĀ as Fix Now, Doc and Defer or Accept Risk.Ā
Contribute to architecture and cloud readinessĀ
Help shape CT LIMS placement within our Azure landing zone and environment tiers (production, non-production, sandbox).Ā
Contribute to high-availability and hybrid on-prem design, including the instrument-integration constraints that require a local network presence.Ā
Partner with the Staff Engineer, the cloud and landing-zone owner and the platformĀ architectsĀ so the modernization aligns with adjacentĀ OnterrisĀ platforms rather than duplicating them.Ā
Develop reference implementations and prototypes that de-risk theĀ architectureĀ choice while it is still being made.Ā
Help the team move from āready to startā to āshippingā without a standing start if the modernization is approved.Ā
What success looks likeā¦Ā
A senior engineer with no prior CT LIMS exposure can navigate the system from your documentation alone, and it holds up under structured review.Ā
Spec-Driven and Test-Driven Development is simply how you work. Specs and tests precede code, and itĀ shows inĀ the quality of what ships.Ā
The legacy componentsĀ youāveĀ touched are documented, diagrammed inĀ MermaidĀ and committed to Git. No tribal knowledge, no binary files.Ā
AI-assisted workflowsĀ youāveĀ helped build are reused across the team, not one-off.Ā
Reference implementations exist for the riskiest parts of the target architecture andĀ restsĀ on evidence, not opinion.Ā
YouāreĀ contributing productionĀ modernizationĀ code within the firstĀ 90 days, not still ramping up.Ā
Your Expertise and SkillsĀ
These requirements reflect the knowledge,Ā skillsĀ and abilities that help you do your best work here.Ā
7+ years of professional software engineering experience.Ā
Strong cloud-native engineering fundamentals (Azure preferred; AWS or GCP equivalent acceptable).Ā
Demonstrated practice with Spec-Driven and Test-Driven Development, cleanĀ architectureĀ and domain-driven design.Ā
Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or similar).Ā
Ability to read, reverse-engineer and reasonĀ aboutĀ an unfamiliar or legacy codebase you did not write.Ā
Comfortable producing documentation and diagrams as code (Markdown, Mermaid.js) versioned in Git.Ā
Strong communication. You can explain the āwhyā to experienced engineers andĀ partnerĀ effectively across teams.Ā
You respectfully challenge your peers, and welcome the opportunity when others challenge you.Ā
You are flexible,Ā resilientĀ and curious.Ā
You understand prior art but are compelled to iterate beyond it.Ā
Preferred experienceĀ
Experience reverse-engineering orĀ maintainingĀ systems written in Perl or another long-lived legacy language.Ā
Background in LIMS, scientific or other regulated and compliance-driven software (EPA reporting, chain-of-custody, lab accreditation).Ā
Experience with Oracle,Ā and withĀ evaluating database migrations (for example, toward PostgreSQLĀ and orĀ Snowflake).Ā
Familiarity with containerization (PodmanĀ or Docker) and hybrid on-prem and cloud deployment patterns.Ā
Exposure to enterprise integrations such as Workday.Ā
Familiarity with prompt engineering and AI workflow optimization.Ā
Why this role is compellingĀ
YouāreĀ joining at the inflection point of our most important custom system. TheĀ archaeology,Ā documentationĀ and reference architecture you produce are whatĀ definesĀ subsequentĀ systems.Ā The tools are licensed. The leadership is committed. The standards are set.Ā
ThisĀ isnātĀ maintenanceĀ and itĀ isnātĀ a blank page.Ā ItāsĀ the rare chance to take deep institutional knowledge locked inside a legacy system and help rebuildĀ it in a modernĀ framework, with specs,Ā testsĀ and modern infrastructure, for everyĀ OnterrisĀ lab that depends on it. The labs you supportĀ protect the air we breathe, the water weĀ drinkĀ and the soil that sustains communities.Ā Your code becomes the foundation the rest is built on.Ā
