SUMMARY:

This is the first level of the Engineering classification dedicated to the substation engineering department. Provide engineering/technical expertise to solve problems in a specific area of expertise, with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills in their field of study, and the ability to work with greater independence.

The compensation range for this position is between $70,000.00 and $85,000.00.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems.

 Effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.

 Thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.

 Continuous improvement of job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.

 Select and specify substation equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, protection relays).

 Perform engineering calculations and simulations for reliable operation.

 Perform other duties as assigned by management.

 

COMPLEXITY OF WORK

  • Generally routine, established precedents; practices and procedures exist.

 

RELATIONSHIP OUTSIDE WORK GROUP:

  • Exchange of information, which occasionally requires tact and/or diplomacy.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Required A Bachelor’s degree from a four-year EAC/ABET accredited Electrical Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Electrical Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs.

  • 0-1  Year(s) Experience in Electrical Substation

 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

  • Received a passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam is preferred.

 

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING

  • Training will be provided as needed.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

A. Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, operational procedures, etc.

B. Ability to write simple correspondence.

C. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

A. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

B. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret spread sheets.

C. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY: 

A. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

B. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of basic electrical engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Understanding of basic electricity and power quality.
  • Knowledge of Substation construction standards and methods.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to customer greenfield and brownfield sites and offices.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management is preferred.
  • Experience in the utility industry is preferred.
  • Introductory knowledge of electrical physical design of substations and/or protection and control design of substations is preferred.
