JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

  • The Mine Planning Engineer will develop and maintain short to medium-term mine plans for Magris Talc’s Eastern Mining operations; the Argonaut Mine in Vermont, and the Penhorwood Mine in Ontario, CAN 

JOB SCOPE/DIMENSIONS

  • Member of the Corporate Geology and Mine Planning (GMP) group providing remote technical support to mining operations 
  • Office-based with approximately 15-20% travel 
  • May provide site-based technical support (e.g. surveying) on an as-needed basis

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates 12 to 24-month mine plans that correlate with longer range mine plans. Reconciles actual performance against plan and re-forecasts on a quarterly basis 
  • Ensure plans are de-risked & optimized. In doing so, identifies opportunities for improvement and solutions. Supports the development and justification of capital investment projects needed to execute plans and/or optimize/improve
  • Ensure there is sufficient data reporting and tracking mechanisms to compare metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to plan assumptions 
  • Develops conceptual designs for drill/blast patterns and mining cuts as well as mine features such as roads, ramps, and dumps
  • Consolidates plans into concise reports and presentations for use in annual budgeting and quarterly financial forecasting exercises
  • Consults with geologists and long-range mine planners. Presents mine plans to site technical, operations, and management teams. Responds to feedback and adjusts plans accordingly 
  • Ensure safe work systems/procedures are always practiced and adhered to in accordance with all health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) standards
  • Abide by and proactively comply with Company protocols, policies, procedures, guidelines, and systems, as well as all relevant legislation
  • Participates in corporate mine planning team reviews and audits as required
  • Other duties as assigned

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in minerals/mining engineering or other technical discipline
  • Relevant mine operations experience preferred 
  • Experience using Hexagon mining software products (such as MinePlan 3D, Activity Scheduler) preferred 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project) 

Knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics:

  • Must have the ability to travel internationally (i.e. valid passport), primarily to Canada 
  • Organizational skills will be necessary for scheduling and conducting meetings
  • Analytical and statistical skills are needed to evaluate and analyze data
  • Must have a solutions-oriented mindset with the ability to develop own systems and/or processes where necessary 
  • Ability to prepare (author) technical reports, and effectively present technical information to individuals/groups with varying backgrounds 
  • Computer skills are required to manage and utilize data management and mine planning software (MinePlan3D) packages and ensure best practice mine planning and development
  • Interpersonal skills are necessary in order to work with both internal and external personnel without major conflicts
  • Ability to assess risk (to HSEQ or otherwise) of designs and projects 
  • Maintain exemplary standard of housekeeping at all times 
  • Active involvement in safety initiatives to ensure a safe work environment
  • Administrative skills are required to manage paperwork, meet reporting requirements, oversee the management of various systems, and ensure that stakeholders have the detail needed to execute plans
  • Self-motivation is necessary to ensure that the work progresses without constant supervision 
  • Planning skills are needed to ensure mine plans and other engineering activities are effectively developed and maintained and that the timely completion of programs satisfy legal and corporate objectives
  • Financial skills are necessary to evaluate mine-related projects and improvement ideas
  • Training and team building skills will be needed to improve individual competencies
  • Communications skills will be used to interact with employees at all levels of the organization as well as external consultants and contractors
