Accountant

At Michael David Winery, we believe great wine starts with great people. We're looking for an experienced Accountant to join our Finance team and help steward the financial health of one of California's most celebrated family-owned wineries. If you thrive at the intersection of accounting rigor and real-world operations — and you'd love to do it surrounded by vineyards — we'd love to hear from you.

Location: Lodi, California (On-site) |  Department: Accounting / Finance

Experience: 5–7+ years of progressive accounting experience

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

About the Role

The Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial integrity of Michael David Winery's operations. You'll own key processes across the general ledger, cost accounting, and fixed assets — while working cross-functionally with operations, production, and sales teams. This is a hands-on role with meaningful visibility and the opportunity to make a real impact.

What You'll Do

General Ledger & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and post monthly, quarterly, and year-end journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and variance analysis, investigating significant fluctuations.
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations and maintain sub-ledger to general ledger integrity.
  • Support development and maintenance of financial reports and dashboards for management review.

Standard Costing & Inventory Accounting

  • Maintain and update standard costs for raw materials, packaging, and finished goods in the ERP system.
  • Analyze production variances (material, labor, overhead) and provide actionable insights to operations.
  • Reconcile inventory sub-ledgers — bulk wine, bottled goods, packaging, and work-in-progress.
  • Collaborate with production and winemaking teams to ensure accurate cost allocations across vintages and product lines.

Fixed Assets

  • Maintain the fixed asset register including capitalization policies, depreciation methods, disposals, and impairment.
  • Properly classify capital expenditures versus repairs and maintenance.
  • Support capital budgeting processes and contribute to asset-related management reports.

ERP Systems & Sub-Ledger Management

  • Serve as a key accounting user of our ERP system (Business Central) maintaining data integrity.
  • Oversee sub-ledger reconciliations: accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, and fixed assets.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system workflows, reporting, and automation.
  • Support ERP upgrades and integrations with third-party platforms.

Compliance, Audit & Tax Support

  • Support external financial audits, 401(k) audits, and tax examinations.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, TTB reporting requirements, state excise tax filings, and other wine industry regulations.
  • Assist with sales/use tax filings, property tax returns, and other state/federal compliance requirements.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

  • Support the annual budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with department heads.
  • Perform financial analysis including cost-benefit analysis, margin analysis by product line, and ad-hoc executive reporting.
  • Track and report on departmental budget performance, highlighting areas of concern and opportunity.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
  • 5–7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise with ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Business Central, SAP, Oracle, or similar).
  • Solid understanding of standard costing, inventory accounting, and fixed asset management.
  • Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, complex formulas, data modeling).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in the wine, spirits, or beverage manufacturing industry.
  • Familiarity with TTB reporting, excise tax compliance, and wine industry regulatory requirements.
  • CPA designation or public accounting/audit background.
  • Experience with document management systems.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Generous paid time off.
  • A collaborative, family-oriented culture rooted in a genuine love of wine and the land.
