POSITION SUMMARY: The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for repairs and maintenance of physical structures such as government buildings, tribal enterprises, housing units and rental units owned by the Tribe. This position performs all tasks related to the maintenance, repairs, and modifications of buildings, equipment, and common areas as requested through work orders. Must be able to operate and maintain approved power tools and mechanical equipment. Performs drywall, painting, carpentry, electrical and plumbing repair work at varying levels of advanced. Conducts Health and Safety inspections of the government buildings, tribal enterprises, and housing/rental units owned by the Tribe. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned Level I: Practices and enforces safety procedures at all times when assisting in work across Tribal Government facilities. Assists in troubleshooting and performing repairs on electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and appliance systems, under direct supervision. Participates in preventative maintenance activities such as changing filters, lubricating equipment, and routine cleaning of mechanical systems, under guidance. Assists with facility upkeep tasks including cleaning, trash removal, landscaping, painting, and preparation of spaces for occupancy or events. Operates and maintains hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely, but only under supervision. Completes assigned portions of work orders for any Tribal department (government, housing, enterprises, recreation, and community facilities) as directed. Learns procedures for health and safety inspections, documentation, and recordkeeping by shadowing Level II and III staff. Supports event and function set-up, equipment handing, and basic repairs under direction. Level II: Must meet all requirements for Level I Independently performs skilled maintenance and repair tasks across all Tribal facilities, including carpentry, painting, drywall, flooring, and minor masonry or concrete repair. Provides intermediate-level plumbing and electrical services such as fixture replacement, outlet repair, leak patching, and basic system troubleshooting. Maintains and repairs mechanical systems (HVAC, pumps, motors, fans) at a technician level, ensuring safe and reliable operation. Assists with the setup, repair, and seasonal maintenance of Tribal recreational areas, sports fields, and community event facilities. Provides finish work (painting, alignment, fixture repair) to maintain professional and welcoming spaces. Coordinates with other departments to schedule and complete maintenance requests in a timely manner. Assists in training and mentoring Level I staff in proper methods, safety, and work standards. Participates in hazardous material cleanup and ensures compliance with safety procedures. Level III: Meets all requirements of Level II Supervisory Leadership Serves as the primary supervisor for all Maintenance Engineers (Levels I and II) and other assigned staff. Assigns daily tasks, monitors progress, and ensures completion of work orders across all Tribal facilities. Provides training, mentoring, and performance feedback to Level I and II staff, fostering skill development and adherence to Tribal maintenance standards. Ensures compliance with safety protocols and department policies in all work performed. Advanced Technical Work Performs high-level troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair complex systems, including HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing infrastructure, and mechanical equipment. Designs and implements preventative maintenance programs across government, enterprise, housing, recreation, and community facilities. Responds personally to the most complex or urgent maintenance requests requiring advance technical expertise. Project & Contractor Oversight Coordinates and oversees contractor and vendor work, including procurement, scheduling, inspection, and acceptance of completed projects. Provides technical input for renovation projects, upgrades, and capital improvement planning. Ensures Tribal facilities meet applicable building codes, health and safety regulations, and operational standards. Administrative Responsibilities Maintains detailed maintenance records, inspection reports, and preventative maintenance schedules. Prepares status reports for the Maintenance Director and contributes to budget planning by identifying long-term infrastructure and resource needs. Manages inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies, ensuring readiness for routine and emergency maintenance. Interdepartmental Collaboration Serves as the point of contact for Tribal departments regarding facility maintenance needs, project planning, and emergency response. Advises leadership on technical feasibility, costs, and timeliness for projects affecting Tribal infrastructure. AUTHORITY/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Level III Engineers will have direct supervisory authority over assignment and performance of all tasks performed by Engineers within the Maintenance Department. Level II Engineers will assist and oversee daily tasks of Level I Engineers. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Must be eighteen (18) years of age. Must have High School diploma or its equivalent. Level I (Salary Range 1-3): 1+ year preferred experience in maintenance, to include drywall and painting, electrical and/or plumbing. (Drywall and painting both required, one of either electrical or plumbing) Level II (Salary Range 3-5): 3+ years of experience in maintenance, to include drywall and painting, electrical and/or plumbing. (Drywall and painting both required, one of either electrical or plumbing) Level III (Salary Range 6-8): 6+ years of experience in maintenance, to include drywall, painting, electrical, and plumbing. Must have 3+ years of supervisory experience required. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Shall possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by agencies insurance. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and physical. COMPUTER OPERATIONS Basic personal computer skills. Experience with MS Office products, databases, and email. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to operate standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.). Must be able to work with American Indian people and be sensitive to their culture. Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures.
