POSITION SUMMARY
The family dentist will manage patients’ oral health by diagnosing their dental/ oral conditions, will prescribe and carry out, or direct others in carrying out, appropriate dental/ oral treatment. The family dentist will refer patients for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines.
HOURS
- This is a contract, part-time position with flexible hours based on patient need.
CATEGORIES OF DUTIES
- Upholds high standards of dental practice, ethics, and professionalism.
- Assists the Dental Director and provides recommendations for practice improvements.
- Conducts risk assessments (CAMBRA) for patients of all ages.
- Accurately records patient-dentist interactions in Wisdom/EPIC dental records.
- Performs dental examinations and determines appropriate treatments.
- Administers topical application of fluorides and prescribes fluoride for systemic use when appropriate.
- Apply sealants and conduct diagnostic screening for caries and periodontal disease using dental x-rays.
- Performs fillings and single unit crowns; non-surgical-endodontics, simple extractions, periodontal therapies, bridges, or dentures when appropriate.
- Completes required referrals, data collection, and documentation.
- Educates patients on oral health conditions and disease prevention.
- Engages with professional dental organizations as per clinic policies.
- Familiarizes with federal and state regulations for community health centers.
- Participates in dental staff and center committees as assigned.
- Supports continuing education and training for health center staff.
- Provides technical assistance and health education to the community.
- Administers anesthetics and manages dental emergencies and infections.
- Participates in peer review assessments.
- Participates in Dental department meetings, QA sessions, and Peer Review committees.
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and center regulations related to dental practice and clinical care.
- Adheres to TTC’s Exposure Control Plan, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment and Universal Precautions.
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and effectively works with diverse patient populations.
- Consistently meets quality and production targets set by the clinics administration.
- May supervise dental students and residents and assist patients with mental health or substance abuse issues.
- Engages in safety programs and may be assigned to an emergency response team.
- Completes other tasks as directed by the clinics administration.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine conferred by a dental school approved by the World Health Organization as required by the California Dental Practice Act.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in general dentistry.
- Two plus years of community clinic experience preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- A California license to practice dentistry issued by the Dental Board of California.
- A Radiation Safety License issued by the Dental Board of California -OR- A certificate of compliance from an approved Board course in radiation Safety.
- Current NPI number and DEA registrations.
- Current CPR (BLS) certifications.
- Completion of an accredited general practice residency program is preferred but not required.
- Requires a comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings.
- Must have an interest in the design of and in evaluating the efficiency of dental programs in the community health care setting.
- Authoritative knowledge of the practice and techniques of dentistry as general practitioner in a community health center is highly desirable.
- Proficient computer skills and experience with electronic dental records software.
