Abode Communities is growing — and we're looking for a detail-driven accountant who wants their work to have a visible, lasting impact. As our Development Accountant, you'll sit at the intersection of finance and mission, managing the dollars that turn affordable housing projects from blueprints into homes. You'll own the accounting for our developments from acquisition through construction, working closely with Development Project Managers, lenders, contractors, and vendors to keep every project funded, on track, and audit-ready. Core Competencies for this role: Analyzing: Analyses numerical data, verbal data and all other sources of information; Breaks information into component parts, patterns and relationships; Probes for further information or greater understanding of a problem; Makes rational judgements from the available information and analysis; Produces workable solutions to a range of problems; Demonstrates an understanding of how one issue may be a part of a much larger system Planning & Organizing: Sets clearly defined objectives; Plans activities and projects well in advance and takes account of possible changing circumstances; Manages time effectively; Identifies and organizes resources needed to accomplish tasks; Monitors performance against deadlines and milestones Learning & Researching: Rapidly learns new tasks and quickly commits information to memory; Gathers comprehensive information to support decision making; Demonstrates a rapid understanding of newly presented information; Manages knowledge (collects, catalogues, and disseminates knowledge of use to the organization) Working with People: Demonstrates an interest in and understanding of others; adapts to the team and builds team spirit; recognizes and rewards the contribution of others; listens, consults others and communicates proactively; supports and cares for others; develops and openly communicates self-insight Presenting & Communicating Information: Speaks clearly and fluently; expresses opinions, information, and key points of an argument clearly; makes presentations and undertakes public speaking with skill and confidence; responds quickly to the needs of an audience and to their reactions and feedback Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Prepare, submit, and track funding draws to multiple lenders across the acquisition, predevelopment, and construction phases of affordable housing projects Assist in preparing cost certifications, working closely with the Development team and external auditors Total Job Costing: ensuring the budget is in line with contracts, change orders, and actual project costs Verify contractor and subcontractor lien releases before payments go out Reconcile construction-in-progress and related general ledger accounts to draw sheets and to disbursed amounts Partner with Development staff and Accounts Payable to keep vendor invoices and draw requests moving on schedule Review cash disbursements and process deposits accurately and on time Prepare journal entries and maintain general ledger, balance sheet, and income/expense schedules Reconcile monthly A/R, A/P, cash, and inter-entity advances; reconcile loan draws and job cost reports to the general ledger Prepare audit schedules and support external auditors in delivering on-time annual audit reports Contribute to special projects as assigned by Development Accounting leadership QualificationsEquivalent Education, Experiences, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Bachelor's degree plus at least two years of accounting experience; real estate or construction accounting experience with multiple sets of books is a strong plus Comfort with computerized accounting, word processing, and spreadsheet tools (e.g., MRI, AvidXchange, Microsoft Word and Excel) Strong analytical skills — you can break down numbers, spot patterns, and turn data into clear, workable answers Excellent planning and time management, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines A collaborative, communicative style — you build good working relationships with project managers, lenders, and vendors alike A valid California driver's license, current auto insurance, and access to an insured vehicle for occasional travel within our service area
