info
  • The Music Center in Los Angeles is seeking a Director of Creative and Social Strategy to lead its Marketing and Communications Department.
  • This senior role requires 7-10 years of experience in social media, content strategy, and digital storytelling, preferably within arts organizations or cultural institutions.
  • The position involves overseeing content production, setting platform strategies, and enhancing audience engagement across various digital channels.
  • The salary for this full-time, exempt position ranges from $100,000 to $102,820, with a comprehensive benefits package included.
  • The role currently operates on a hybrid schedule of four days remote and one day in-office, subject to change based on event needs.

As L.A.’s performing arts center, The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of deepening the cultural lives of every resident in Los Angeles County. The $80 million non-profit performing arts organization has two divisions: TMC Arts and TMC Ops. TMC Arts, The Music Center’s programming engine, provides year-round programming inside The Music Center’s four theatres, on Jerry Moss Plaza, outside at Gloria Molina Grand Park—a 12-acre adjacent green space—in schools and other locations all over Los Angeles County. TMC Arts presents world-class dance with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, participatory dancing experiences, free and low-cost public concerts and events, live and digital K–12 arts education programs, workshops, performances, interactive experiences and special events. TMC Ops manages the theatres, the Plaza and Gloria Molina Grand Park, which comprise $3 billion in county assets, on behalf of the County of Los Angeles. The Music Center is also home to four renowned resident companies—Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles Master Chorale, LA Opera and LA Phil. Each of these companies is responsible for their own programming and marketing.

The Music Center is hiring a Director, Creative and Social Strategy to join its Marketing and Communications Department. This is a senior, highly visible role for a storyteller and strategist who will define how The Music Center shows up across digital and social platforms. Reporting to the assistant vice president of ticketing & marketing strategy, the director sets the vision and strategy for content, short-form storytelling, production, audience growth and platform strategy across The Music Center's institutional brand and its programs as curated/presented by its arts division, TMC Arts.

The role has evolved significantly from day-to-day social media management to leadership of content strategy end-to-end, from concept and production through platform strategy, audience growth and analytics. The director, creative and social strategy is responsible for producing high-quality short-form video, photography and other original content for paid advertising and organic social media; setting platform-specific strategies; and using performance data and audience insights to continually refine content and drive engagement. The director builds and elevates The Music Center's presence across digital platforms, ensures a consistent and compelling institutional voice and partners closely with senior marketing leadership for The Music Center, local arts organizations, Gloria Molina Grand Park and other stakeholders to build audiences and deepen engagement with support for both paid ticketed performance and events and free/non-ticketed programming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own and evolve The Music Center's content and social strategy, setting the creative and platform vision across the institutional brand and TMC Arts programming and aligning that vision with broader marketing and organizational goals.
  • Lead end-to-end video production — concepting, scripting, shooting, directing and editing short-form and long-form video — for use in paid advertising campaigns as well as organic social and digital content.
  • Set and continually refine platform and audience growth strategies across channels (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and others), determining where and how content should live, adapting formats to each platform's best practices and staying ahead of emerging trends and features.
  • Serve as a channel owner for all social media accounts, overseeing daily content creation, curation, publishing and community engagement, including monitoring and escalation of issues as needed.
  • Direct and produce photography, videography and real-time social storytelling at Music Center performances, events and productions, capturing and publishing compelling content that extends the audience experience beyond The Music Center campus.
  • With support from Marketing Department team members, build and manage integrated content calendars that connect program- and event-specific campaigns to The Music Center's broader marketing strategy.
  • Partner with Marketing Department team members on paid social media strategy, identifying opportunities to leverage high-performing organic content, platform insights and audience behavior to inform paid campaigns and creative development.
  • Analyze content and channel performance, using analytics and audience insights to inform strategy, and deliver regular reporting and recommendations to senior leadership on content performance, growth and return on investment.
  • As needed, identify, build and manage relationships with freelance videographers and other content creators that support content production.
  • Manage the content and social budget for certain projects, as appropriate.
  • Mentor and provide direction to junior- and mid-level staff and guide colleagues across departments on social and content best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in social media, content strategy and digital storytelling, including experience leading strategy at an organizational or brand level; experience with arts organizations, museums or other comparable cultural institutions highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience setting and executing content and platform strategy that ties directly to organizational and marketing goals, not just day-to-day channel management.
  • Expert-level video production skills and the ability to lead productions from concept to delivery, including concepting, scripting, shooting, directing and editing; proficiency with professional video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or comparable platforms required.
  • Experience developing content for paid digital and social advertising, with an understanding of how creative strategy, formats and best practices differ across paid and organic channels.
  • Expert-level photography skills and experience with real-time event coverage using DSLR and mobile equipment; experience creating social and marketing graphics using design software (Photoshop, Illustrator and/or Canva).
  • Must understand social and digital analytics, with demonstrable experience using social media management and analytics platforms to measure impact and shape strategy.
  • Expert-level writing and editing skills, with experience crafting platform-appropriate, audience- focused content optimized for digital discovery and engagement.
  • Experience managing budgets and vendors, with strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor and influence—including guiding staff in other departments
—and to communicate ideas and recommendations effectively with senior leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree required, with a focus on communications, media, film/video production, marketing, advertising, graphic design, photography or a related field preferred.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays as required.

PLEASE NOTE: Currently, this position is working four days per week remotely and one day per week in the office except in the case of performances and events, which require on-site support. This scenario may change and is also subject to the responsibilities of the position.

SALARY:

This full-time, exempt position offers a competitive annual salary range of $100.000 –$102.820 along with a comprehensive total rewards package. Benefits include premium medical, dental, and vision coverage; generous paid time off, including vacation and sick leave; a 401(k)-retirement plan with employer contributions and matching; group term life insurance; and flexible spending accounts.
