Position Overview

Our organization is migrating approximately 70 end users off of Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) and onto physical, hybrid-joined Windows laptops to reduce cloud infrastructure costs. This is a hands-on, user-facing project that involves converting devices from Autopilot/Entra-joined to hybrid-joined status, provisioning software, coordinating loaner equipment, and decommissioning Azure VM workloads once the transition is confirmed complete. We are hiring an experienced temp contractor to serve as the primary, day-to-day driver of this migration. Our internal IT Service Desk team (two technicians) will remain available for support and knowledge-sharing but will be focused on internal tickets and other projects, so this contractor will own execution of the migration from start to finish.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with end users to schedule and manage the laptop swap process with minimal disruption to their workday.
  • Issue temporary Autopilot loaner laptops to users so they can continue accessing their Azure VM during the transition.
  • Collect users' existing laptops and convert them from Azure AD/Entra-joined (Autopilot) to hybrid-joined, working within on-prem Active Directory and Entra ID.
  • Manage and update computer objects in on-prem AD and Entra ID (OU placement, group membership, device attributes, etc.).
  • Install and configure base software images and role-specific/department-specific applications on each converted laptop, using Intune and/or NinjaOne (or a comparable RMM/endpoint management platform).
  • Coordinate with each user to complete first login, profile setup, and validation that all required resources and permissions are working correctly.
  • Retrieve loaner laptops once users are fully transitioned onto their own converted device.
  • Support users during a defined grace period as they shift workloads from their Azure VM to their local laptop, troubleshooting access, software, or performance issues as they arise.
  • Track and document migration status per user (device conversion, software install, workload cutover, VM deallocation) to give project stakeholders clear visibility into progress.
  • Confirm with each user and their manager that all workloads have been fully migrated before flagging the corresponding Azure VM for deallocation.
  • Maintain clear, organized records of device inventory, loaner assignments, and AD/Entra changes throughout the project.

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Hands-on experience managing Windows devices with Microsoft Intune (enrollment, configuration profiles, app deployment, compliance policies).
  • Solid working knowledge of on-prem Active Directory and Entra ID (Azure AD), including managing computer objects, OUs, and group policy basics.
  • Direct experience converting devices between Azure AD/Entra-joined (Autopilot) and hybrid-joined states.
  • Familiarity with an endpoint management platform such as NinjaOne (preferred), SCCM/MECM, Quest KACE, or similar — specifically the ability to build and deploy software install jobs/packages to groups of devices.
  • Comfortable imaging/provisioning laptops and installing both standardized and role-specific software packages.
  • Experience working directly with end users in a white-glove, hands-on support capacity — comfortable coordinating schedules and communicating clearly with non-technical staff.
  • Basic understanding of Azure Virtual Machines (enough to confirm workload cutover and support deallocation requests, not deep Azure administration).
  • Strong organizational skills; able to track progress across many users/devices simultaneously without dropping details.
  • Comfortable working independently once trained on our environment, with regular check-ins with the internal IT lead.

Skills and Knowledge Desired

  • Prior experience specifically supporting a VM-to-physical-device or cloud-cost-reduction migration project.
  • Experience with Windows Autopilot provisioning and troubleshooting.
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Endpoint Manager / Intune Administrator, or similar Microsoft 365 / Azure credentials.

A firm-managed laptop will be issued for the duration of the engagement. A small pool of 5–8 temporary Autopilot loaner laptops will be provided by the organization for use during user transitions. Access to our Intune tenant, on-prem AD, Entra ID, and NinjaOne will be needed — access will be provisioned prior to start. Work will involve direct, scheduled interaction with end users; a professional, patient, customer-service-oriented approach is expected. Scope covers approximately 70 users/VMs; internal IT Service Desk staff will be available for support but will be focused on other priorities, so the Technician will be the primary person driving this project day to day.

  • This is a hybrid position based in Los Angeles, CA which requires weekly attendance.
  • As this is a temporary role, benefits are not included.
