Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is one of the largest human services providers in California. The agency operates a variety of programs to serve the poor and strives to find permanent solutions to crisis situations by offering clients the tools and resources needed to achieve greater self-reliance and stability in their lives. 

Catholic Charities operates 18 community centers and 10 homeless shelters and also serves the poor with multi-faceted programs, including: after-school child care; immigration, refugee, youth employment and psychological services; homework assistance and tutoring; English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Education diploma (GED) classes for adults; and services for homebound seniors and pregnant and parenting youth. In this way, Catholic Charities maintains a continuum of care for clients as they move from vulnerability to self-sufficiency.

The Kitchen Supervisor is responsible for the planning, preparation, and service of nutritious, high-quality meals for residents at Good Shepherd Center’s Interim Housing sites. This position ensures that kitchen operations meet food safety standards, reflect trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practices, and align with the dietary needs of the clients served. The Kitchen Supervisor works closely with the Case Manager and program staff to support the overall well-being of residents through food service. They will also train, schedule, and supervise kitchen volunteers and/or assistants as needed. Ensures cleaning of kitchen, storeroom, freezers, refrigerators and kitchen equipment. Arranges for or picks up donations.

Key Responsibilities:

Meal Preparation & Planning:

  • Prepare and serve daily meals (breakfast and lunch as scheduled) for shelter residents.
  • Develop weekly menus that are nutritious, varied, culturally sensitive, and accommodate special dietary needs (e.g., diabetic, vegetarian, food allergies).
  • Order, receive, and store food and kitchen supplies, ensuring proper inventory control and minimal waste.

Sanitation & Compliance:

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment in compliance with health department regulations and agency policies.
  • Ensure proper food handling, sanitation, and equipment maintenance at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records including food temperatures, inventory logs, and safety checklists.
  • Knowledge of Catholic Charities’ policies, procedure and organization.
  • Knowledge of Catholic Charities’ food bank

Supervision & Collaboration:

  • Supervise and provide directions to kitchen volunteers, interns, and community service workers.
  • Train volunteers in basic kitchen safety, food preparation, and hygiene procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with Case Managers and program staff to respond to resident dietary needs and preferences.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to trauma-informed care planning.

Other Duties:

  • Assist with donation intake, sorting, and inventory of food-related items.
  • Support community events or special meals as needed.
  • Report any concerns regarding residents’ health, safety, or behavior to GSC leadership.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Formal culinary training or food service certification preferred.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in food preparation.
  • Valid Food Restaurant Manager Certificate required (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Handle public contact and relations effectively. 
  • Supervisory experience, particularly working with volunteers, preferred.
  • Understanding trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and cultural humility in service provision is highly desirable.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Must pass a background check and meet health requirements per agency policies.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
