The NHMLAC is seeking a Puppetry and Technical Coordinator for our Education & Programs department. The Puppetry and Technical Coordinator is responsible for assist the management in the maintenance and repair as well as development and fabrication of puppet, prop, scenic, and technical elements for the Performing Arts programs.


Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Acquires knowledge of the Museums and its programs, cultural and scientific concepts by becoming familiar with the Museum’s resources, exhibits, collections, and programs, as well as the Museums’ initiatives and policies in support of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.
  • Maintains/operates some or all of the following: a full-suit puppet, stilts, mask, marionettes, shadow puppets, and other physical theater/puppetry mediums, as needed. Coordinates in the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of prop, costume, puppet, and scenic elements.
  • Maintains optimal physical health with a combination of strength, stretch and cardiovascular exercises appropriate for the development and performance of the Performing Arts shows and programs.
  • Provides logistical and technical support including stage coordination when needed for specific programs and events.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety in assigned work areas and performs all duties in compliance with Performing Arts best practice guidelines and requirements.
  • Assist management in the development and fabrication of new puppets as well as designs as needed for performing arts shows.

This position has the following requirements:

  • Contribute in the day-to-day operations of a scene, properties, or practical visual effects shop including equipment and facility maintenance, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Experience with prop, scenic, costume and puppet fabrication.
  • Act with integrity and an ability to carry oneself with the demeanor, decorum and professionalism needed for the position and its interaction with others. Demonstrate ability to work with others on teams, across an organization and external audiences. Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels within an organization, including on cross-departmental projects.
  • Possess initiative, strong personal work ethic and good judgment. Capability to organize and prioritize work independently in order to meet agreed upon deadlines.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, peer reviewed primary literature, or government regulations.
  • Must be able to work weekends, including evenings and holidays and be willing to work at any of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County locations.
