Karman Industries
Long Beach, CA
Founded in 2024 and headquartered in Signal Hill, California, Karman Industries is at the forefront of revolutionizing industrial thermal energy. Our mission is to electrify global thermal systems across data centers, manufacturing, and energy industries. Karman is developing the revolutionary Heat Processing Unit (HPU) to reinvent thermal handling for giga-scale data centers & AI factories. The HPU is built around a supercritical CO2 chiller system utilizing a high-speed electrically driven turbomachinery core. Our system aims to reduce energy consumption in data center thermal management by greater than 25% and increase energy density by 10x.
At Karman Industries, we are committed to fostering a dynamic and inclusive work environment where innovation thrives. Our team is composed of passionate professionals dedicated to making a tangible impact on the future of industrial manufacturing. Join us in our mission to transform the industry and contribute to a more sustainable world.
Senior Electrical Engineer
Karman Industries is seeking a highly motivated Electrical Engineer to join our team to lead the design of the next generation of electric heat pumps to electrify industrial process heat. The candidate will lead the design, development, and qualification of the electrical system for the Thermal01 heat pump and subsequent product development. Ownership will span across high power electronics, sensors, motor control, instrumentation, and more. We are looking for individuals able to drive all phases of a project development, from concept through to manufacturing. We are a team that relies on strong first principles approach and working together as a team to deliver a cohesively developed system.
Responsibilities:
Work with a tightly knit team across disciplines to develop all aspects of the Karman heat pump.
Ownership of critical hardware components and responsibility for every aspect of the design. Demonstrate ownership including manufacturing and assembly of early prototypes
Power system development and implementation: Drive system architecture, define requirements, prototyping & debugging needs, development of safety procedures, and integration with customer requirements
Develop analytical, physics based (first principles) models to determine hardware performance and limitations.
Lead the development and integration of high-power systems on product skids and tie into industrial grids
Analyze and implement compliance requirements for certification (UL, CE) as well as industrial and grid codes (e.g. NEC)
Develop, build and maintain hardware-in-the-loop setups for test and production hardware
Develop, draft, and implement electrical schematics for grid and power equipment integration
Lead modeling and simulation of power converter topologies and control strategies using tools like MATLAB/Simulink or other packages
Ensure that hardware development meets performance targets, development timelines and cost
Ability to implement novel solutions to challenging problems, thinking outside the box and challenging the status quo
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics or related discipline
3+ years of experience in the design of electrical hardware, components, or systems
Strong expertise in high power electronics, medium voltage system and grid electrical systems and integration
Experience with switching devices (IGBTs, SiC/GaN MOSFETs) and magnetic components.
Self-motivated and higher performer, ability to self-manage, multi-task, and communicate excellently.
Knowledge of electrical test equipment and safe handling of high-power systems
Desired Skills and Experience:
Master's or higher degree in electrical, mechanical or aerospace engineering
Strong understanding of fundamentals of hardware and electrical design, and hands on experience with build
Experience with analytical design, turbomachinery testing and engine testing
Software fluency for analysis and automation
Experience with permanent magnet motors and high-speed motor control
Working knowledge of instrumentation and controls for complex systems
Strong Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills in NX or similar software
Experience taking products or projects from conception through to manufacturing and final operation
