Summary:

The Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a high school sports reporter for the Los Angeles Daily News. The reporter covers the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas, including schools that regularly produce future Olympians and some of the most highly recruited athletes in the country.

What you will do:

  • Cover breaking news, the biggest games, and top athletes within the Los Angeles Daily News coverage area

  • Communicate effectively with editors, reporters, the print desk, and digital/social teams

  • Deliver clean copy on deadline with the ability to break news and write compelling game stories, features, or analysis pieces

  • Manage and work within a budget for freelancers

  • Provide occasional coverage of college and professional sports for the Southern California News Group

  • Find and tell stories that go beyond the game

  • Utilize a full suite of digital tools to break news, post updates rapidly, engage with our audience across various social media platforms, and tell stories using multimedia formats and newsletters

What you will bring:

  • Experience in a similar role at a daily newspaper or sports website is preferred

  • Strong reporting, writing, and deadline-management skills

  • Excellent communication and planning skills

  • Comfort appearing occasionally on camera for sports coverage

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required

  • A degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is preferred

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly wage is $24.04+ cell stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Conditions of Employment:

  • Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed

  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
