The Director of Student Affairs addresses the non-academic and certain co-curricular
needs of the law school students and maintains an open-door policy to further these ends. Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Administration and Student Development, the Director is responsible for managing student-facing policies, crisis management, and addressing student conduct violations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Student Care and Formation

    Provide guidance to students regarding personal, interpersonal, and professional development needs, promoting student well-being and readiness for the legal profession

    Encourage holistic student formation, including professional and spiritual growth consistent with the Law School’s Christian mission

  • Counseling and Referral

    Offer appropriate support and spiritual encouragement to students and connect them with counseling, wellness, and pastoral resources as needed

  • Student Conduct and Accountability

    Investigate and adjudicate student conduct matters in a fair, consistent, and developmentally oriented manner

    Promote a culture of integrity, professionalism, and adherence to the Law School Honor Code and expectations of the legal profession

  • Mentorship and Discipleship Initiatives

    Oversee and strengthen mentoring programs that foster Christ-centered discipleship, professional identity formation, and meaningful student engagement

  • Community Building

    Collaborate with the Associate Dean to design and implement programs that cultivate a unified, respectful, and mission-driven community among students, faculty, and staff

  • Signature Events and Ceremonies

    Serve as primary planner and coordinator of key Law School events, including Convocation, the 3Lannual Awards Ceremony, and Degree Presentation Ceremony

    Ensure events reflect institutional excellence, professionalism, and the Law School’s Christian identity

  • Student Engagement and Programming

    Partner with internal teams to plan and execute orientation, formation initiatives, and co-curricular programming that supports student development

  • Student Organizations

    Oversee student organizations to ensure compliance with institutional policies and alignment with the Law School mission

    Advise student leaders in responsible stewardship of resources, budgeting, and program execution

  • Student Bar Association

    Supervise and advise the Student Bar Association, encouraging leadership development, servant leadership, and effective representation of the student body

  • Budget and Resource Stewardship

Assist the Associate Dean in developing, managing, and stewarding the Student Affairs budget with integrity, accountability, and alignment to institutional priorities

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES  

Provides daily task supervision/direction to the department’s fulltime administrative assistant. Supervises one student worker during the academic year and one summer temporary worker.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 3 Years of experience in higher education, student development, counseling, or advisory roles required; law school or professional school experience preferred. 

ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Communication and Comprehension

  • Demonstrated ability to engage students with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment in both routine and complex situations.
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University School of Law.
  • Strong competency/experience utilizing MS Office suite/MS 365.

Problem Solving

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound independent judgment.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Will be required to travel (areas of travel include local area, campus, occasionally across Virginia and to other states in support of student activities.)
  • Will be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting.  It is well lit, and the noise level is moderate.  Working environment may include facilitation of events outdoors occasionally.  

Driving Requirements

If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel.  Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position. Weekly use of personal vehicle for local area errands only.

Pay Range

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.


The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
