As a Shop Mechanic at Lone Star Machine Works, you will perform detailed assembly, inspection, repair, and reconditioning of AC and DC electric motors. You will diagnose mechanical and electrical faults, execute quality repairs — from rewinding coils to machining parts to tolerance — and help maintain the shop standards and continuous improvement culture that keep our customers coming back. This is precision work in a full-service machine shop environment, and every motor you repair goes back into equipment that customers depend on. What You'll Do Motor Repair and Reconditioning Build and maintain a solid working knowledge of AC and DC electric motor principles and repair practices. Read and interpret work orders, schematics, and manuals to determine repair requirements for each job. Disassemble motors, generators, gearboxes, and pumps; inspect and clean all components thoroughly. Use testing equipment including ohm, amp, and insulation testers to diagnose faults in armatures, rotors, stators, and windings. Rewind coils, replace bearings, brushes, and seals; reface commutators; machine parts to tolerance standards. Reassemble and load-test motors to verify operational performance before release. Quality, Safety and Documentation Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and strict adherence to safety and lockout/tagout protocols at all times. Accurately complete all required paperwork — documenting repairs, parts used, and time spent on every job. Report equipment maintenance needs, recurring issues, or potential improvements to management. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and suggest process enhancements to increase quality and efficiency. QualificationsWhat We're Looking For Must Have: Mechanical and electrical aptitude with the ability to install, disassemble, diagnose, and repair rotating machinery. Diagnostic proficiency — familiarity with test meters, insulation testing, vibration analysis, and balance/weight alignment techniques. Precision craftsmanship — skill in micrometer and gauge measurements, machining to tolerances, and coil winding. Meticulous attention to detail in both repair work and documentation. Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work in a shop environment (climbing, standing, reaching, bending, kneeling, stooping). Nice to Have: Prior experience repairing and reconditioning AC/DC electric motors, generators, or gearboxes. Experience operating machining equipment in a repair or production environment. Background in oil and gas, construction, heavy equipment, mining, or industrial maintenance — the markets Lone Star serves.
